Pontefract Market - Trading since 1257 AD. Discover this bustling gourmet's paradise in Pontefract. Pontefract Market is stacked with a range of fresh and organic produce including fruit, veg, meat and cheese, as well as condiments, baked treats and delicious street food. There's a wide selection of fantastic specialist ingredients and indulgent treats to take home, as well as plenty of stalls where you can grab a quick and tasty lunch, a beer or even Champagne and pâté de foie gras. Pontefract Market leads the way. It’s innovative management and desire to attract the best traders from across England has seen it expand from its historic market place throughout the streets of the town centre’s pedestrianised and leafy conservation area. The market is supported by Pontefract’s inspirational parking policy which allows free parking in all public car parks and at the roadside every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for up to 2hrs. This initiative is part of the town’s ‘Respect The Potential’ project and run in partnership with its European twin town of Bordeaux: France. (The birth place of Richard II who died at Pontefract) Both town’s commemorated Richard II life with the unveiling of grand statues at key locations in each town on St Valentine’s Day (the day of Richard death). Pontefract hosts a special international market every St Valentines Day to mark the occasion and also celebrate another Frenchman’s link with the town: Charles Duke Of Orléans was a prisoner at Pontefract. He is also credited with writing the worlds first Valentines poem on a card posted back to France from a post office on Love Lane. Pontefract market celebrates its birthday every year in July with a month long programme of cultural events throughout its streets, public houses and in its bustling Town Hall and, sees thousands of people attend a series of A Class race meetings across each week of the month including the Key To The North Stakes which is renown as Europe’s longest horse race and sponsored by Mercedes Benz. A spokesman from the German car manufacturer said “Pontefract is a great place for us to represent our brand. It has a wonderful geographic location, that’s allowed us to join our German friends from Haribo and establish a state of the art group of factories making boot liners and glove compartment latches. We love the market, particularly the Bratwurst sold by Sophie Scholl who is from Forchtenberg. We aim to get around the issue of Brexit with our Panzer division and continue to forge a home here in the Key To The North” This year the market is 761 years old. A train service second to none feeds the town’s three stations, with a regular and affordable National Train Service direct from Leeds, York, Sheffield and London. Tap’in X
