Description
A secret and magical place - saved from neglect & being brought back to life by local volunteers for everyone to enjoy. Coffee Shop Open 10am - 4pm. Car Park open 9am - 5pm. On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away from the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you’ll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape.
It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn – a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today, it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all.

*Applications now CLOSED! Thank you to everyone who has applied - our Coffee Shop Manager will be shortlisting candidates for interview this week.* JOB VACANCY! Coffee Shop Supervisor We are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person to join our team as Coffee Shop Supervisor, in support of our Manager and volunteers in our popular Coffee Shop at Penllergare Valley Woods. Contract for 30 hours per week (on average), usually between the hours of 9:30am and 4:30pm. Will include some Weekend and Bank Holiday working. Hourly rate will be around £8.50-£9.00. To assist in the supervision and development of the Coffee Shop providing high quality refreshments and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, whilst supporting our committed team of volunteers. The successful applicant will play a key part within the developing team and assist in making Penllergare Valley Woods the destination of choice for visitors. A key part of the role is the supervision of volunteers to ensure that they feel fully supported, and that customer service is maintained at the highest level by acting as a welcoming host for visitors to the Valley Woods. The Supervisor will help to maintain excellent levels of food safety, health and hygiene and our coveted 5-star food safety rating. Continuity of stock supply and security are critical and these will be an essential part of the role. The Supervisor will also deputise for the Coffee Shop Manager in their absence. It's all hands on deck for the Penllergare toad patrol this morning as our General Manager rescued three young toads from the storm drains! 🐸🐸🐸 They jump in and are then unable to get back out without a helping hand and can drown if not rescued 😮. We like to look after our wildlife :) Good deed for the day! 😇
Many thanks to everyone who came to our Litter Pick on Tuesday! The weather was awful but some brave souls still turned-out to help us to keep Penllergare Valley Woods clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy :D Here's hoping for better weather for our next litter pick on Tuesday 27th August!

Would you like to be part of the Penllergare Team? Due to increased summer demand for our fantastic Coffee Shop we are looking for temporary Coffee Shop staff to support our wonderful volunteers over the school holidays. If you could do with some extra cash, are friendly and enthusiastic, and have the ability to be very flexible with days worked, we would love to hear from you. Our Coffee Shop is open seven days a week so you will need to be willing to work weekend days and some bank holidays. Full training will be given. We expect this post to be approx. 10-15 hours per week, between 9:30am and 4:30pm. The post could be split between two people. Due to our location you will need to have your own transport.
