This all began way back at the beginning of the year, when Tour O The Borders put on a competition. It was to give someone the opportunity to go from zero to hero in 6 months. The competition offered someone the chance to be personally trained, on a one to one level, from February until the event in September, a 120km route through the gorgeous countryside of the Peebles Borders. And, of course Phil Mack Peebles Physiotherapy and Melanie Riley Advanced Sports and Remedial Massage - Peebles Physiotherapywere more than happy to help support a local event and provide coaching for a budding athlete. Physiotherapy is something that most of us are all familiar with. We will know at least one person who has been involved with physiotherapy. It can be used to help in a wide variety of issues, from sports injuries to chronic pain. Most of you probably have a general idea of what physiotherapy is, but did you know?.... Physiotherapy as we know it today first stated to gain popularity at the end of the 19th Century. After the Polio outbreak of 1916, many women were employed to help sick children with their movements. When veterans of the First World War returned home in need of rehabilitation, the popularity of physiotherapy grew. However, it is believed that Hippocrates, the “Father of Western Medicine” and the man after whom the Hippocratic Oath is named, used practices similar to physiotherapy as far back as 460BC.

Did you know that according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists: 'Patients with MSDs (Muscuolskeletal Disorders) are the largest patient population group treated by physiotherapists. In 2010/11 in England, physiotherapy outpatient services managed 1.9 million adults with a first appointment and 4.8 million follow up appointments for MSDs. Rapid access to musculoskeletal physiotherapists can reduce the amount of time people are off sick and is vital in preventing a new acute problem becoming chronic and long lasting.' All of our physiotherapists are highly qualified and trained in musculoskeletal disorders. How can a MSD phyiotherapist help you? Well, they can: Totally relieve or reduce your pain. Provide you with strategies to best manage your injury or condition. Help you to recover quicker and hasten your return to your normal activities. Improve your flexibility, muscle strength, quality of movement, proprioception and co-ordination. Assist you to achieve exercise or functional goals. Improve your fitness. Help you to prevent future injury recurrences. Prescribe exercises to do at home, work in the gym to enhance your recovery. If you have a niggle then it is always better to get it seen sooner rather than later.

WOW! What a weekend of sporting achievements for Peebles Physiotherapy! First and foremost, congratulations to Katy Noble, who completed the 120km Tour O The Borders - an awesome achievement after only 6 months training. What's next?? Melanie Riley said pop in for a well deserved massage! Well done also to Phil Mack, our Specialist Physiotherapist, Silver in his Age Group at the MTB Scottish Championships, SXC (Scottish Cross Country Association) this weekend at Glentress. Brilliant achievement and amazing what you can do if you actually stay on your bike!! I'm super chuffed with a time of 4:04 for the full beast at Tour O The Borders, a tough day in the saddle, but how can you not enjoy the Borders scenery! Thank you to all the volunteers at both events! Check out some of that beautiful scenery from the day at Ian Linton - just stunning!

What a massive weekend we have ahead of us! Tour O The Borders starting in Peebles AND the MTB SXC (Scottish Cross Country Association) Champs at Glentress, both on Sunday. I want to give Katy Noble a huge good luck for the 124k Tour. A super busy Mum with no time to herself, and who 6 months ago didn't even own a bike! Katy began her training in March and has been an absolute pleasure to work with. She has always been positive, even during the long hard sessions and after falling off her bike on the first ride! Katy, you are an inspiration to all of us and I can't wait to see that huge smile on your face as you cross the finishing line on Sunday afternoon. Good luck and enjoy it. Phil Mack
