POLITE NOTICE I hate writing posts like this to justify my prices but I thought by letting you know what goes into making you a cake might save your time and mine if you’re looking for a cheap cake. Firstly there’s the box that your cake will be in when you collect it. Then there’s the cake board that your cake will sit on. It will be covered in fondant to compliment your style of cake and often decorated as part of the cake design. Then there’s the ribbon that goes around the board with maybe a bow on to add to the prettiness of a girlie cake. Well there’s about £7+ before we even start on the cake not to mention the time that’s taken me to do already. Next we have the ingredients for the cake which are all good fresh products. Once the cake is baked and cooled it needs to be levelled or carved into shape, filled with buttercream and jam. It’s then covered in buttercream and left to set for a little while. I then cover your cake in good quality fondant which I’ve probably spent an hour or so colouring for your design. Covering a cake smoothly in fondant also takes time. This has now taken me around 4 hours plus the time it took me to shop for ingredients, petrol used to get the ingredients, equipment, etc and message you to and fro to come up with design and research different characters and techniques to go on your cake. That’s just the basic cake done now without decoration. You may want television characters or themselves modelled to go on your child’s cake or delicate flowers made for a pretty cake. These are all going to take me many hours to make. My basic cakes start from £45 out of which I may make £15 to £20 for maybe 2 day’s work after the cost of box, board, ribbon, modelling paste etc and all ingredients have been deducted. So please don’t offend me and tell me that my cakes are too expensive or it’s only a cake and just consider how much unskilled workers earn per hour compared to myself and other skilled cake makers, most of the time it works out a lot less than minimum wage. I love creating your cakes for you, I really do, it means the world to me that you choose me to make them, but sometimes, just sometimes please take a minute to think about what goes into each and every quote I give you, been ignored when I’ve put effort into research and working out a price for you, well that’s the worst.
