It was 45 years ago that the Royal Sovereign lightower was towed from its contruction site on East Beach, Newhaven, to its permanant home off Eastbourne. Fascinating to watch the construction and towing out to sea wasn't it?

Newhaven Historical Society holds its next meeting on Tuesday 5th April, when Stephen Fisher of the Maritime Archaeological Trust will give a talk about the Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War. With over 1000 wartime wrecks along England’s south coast alone, the conflict has left a rich heritage legacy and many associated stories of bravery and sacrifice. These underwater memorials represent a reminder of a vital, yet little known struggle that took place on a daily basis, just off our shores. The talk starts at 7.30pm at the Hillcrest Centre, Bay Vue Rd, Newhaven, BN9 9LH, and guests are welcome - £2.00 entry. For further information telephone Tony Helyar 01273 515404
