Read the review of Daily Record's Tam Cowan about the Indian Villa. "Apart from being the birthplace of comedy actress Elaine C Smith, football legend Gary McAllister and Scotland's best-looking restaurant reviewer, my hometown of Motherwell boasts at least one other claim to fame... It surely must be the only place in Scotland with just one Indian restaurant. Okay, there's a takeaway curryhouse on just about every street corner (in fact, they almost outnumber the amount of pound shops) but, in terms of a proper sit-in, knife-and-fork job, Indian Villa is the only one. Quite amazing, really, when you consider nearby Hamilton is home to at least half a dozen Indian restaurants, including Cafe Manzil - one of my all-time favourites. As one of the founder members of TRIFS (that's the Toilet Roll In Fridge Society) I can tell you there's nothing I enjoy more than a right good curry and, as a Motherwell boy, I'm pleased to report Indian Villa ticks all the right boxes. It's perfectly located at the top end of town with loads of parking spaces to the rear and it enjoys plenty of passing trade these days thanks to the thousands of football purists flocking to Fir Park. (Although don't mention curries to any of the lads at Motherwell FC. They got a really dodgy one at the Christmas party in Glasgow a couple of years back and the rest of their season skittered to a halt.) Indian Villa closed for a good few weeks before the festive period for afull refurbishment and now looks very inviting from the outside with flickering candles on each table adding a warm, welcoming touch. Careful with the window seats, though. They're a wee bit drafty and, on the night we visited, I noticed one couple asking to be seated somewhere warmer. Siberia, for example... I'd also suggest the Indian Villa is now a little bit cramped and the smallish tables struggle to cope with all the traditional side dishes, nan breads and drinks. In fact, I bet the first thing you'll do is push the dessert menu, the artificial flower and the cruet set (does anyone ever use salt and pepper in an Indian diner?) to one side. Poppadoms and spiced onions were served the minute our bums touched the seats - a welcome touch as we were absolutely famished after a few scoops in the New Century across the road. Mind you, I almost spat them out again when I clocked the blurb on the menu which read: "We invite you to enjoy a culinary adventure which will massively surpass any dining experience you can claim to have had." Who writes that guff? Probably the same guy who originally churned out the old "you've tried the rest now try the best" claptrap. To be fair, though, I suppose that's the beauty of being the only Indian restaurant in town as I must admit that, yes, this was definitely the best sit-in curry I've ever enjoyed in Motherwell! Seriously, though, the food was very good - but regular customers may be disappointed to discover the buffet, the business lunches and the pre-theatre menus are no longer available. Nope, along with the old tables and chairs, it seems they've been consigned to the skip and it's now a la carte all the way at the new-look Indian Villa. This menu features all the usual suspects so I won't bore you with too many details. Suffice to say the chicken pakora was good and plentiful and, while the mixed tikka platter (chicken, lamb and seekh kebab) was a little bit dry, it had clearly been properly marinated. The curries? My lamb balti (hot) was very good, the chicken buryani will delight anyone with a big appetite and even the chicken korma (strictly a big girl's curry in my book) looked deliciously thick and creamy. I also thought the breads - an important part of any Indian meal - were particularly pleasing and I salute the chef for cremating my onion kulcha exactly as requested. Incidentally, both the kulcha and plain nan had been cut into slices before being served so it would appear even the staff acknowledge the tables don't offer much in the way of elbow room. My verdict on Motherwell's only Indian restaurant? Small but (just about) perfectly formed. TAM'S HOT PLATE AWARD"
