The old causeway at Compasses Bridge is being demolished and bricklaying and landscaping is now being done. Thanks to KESCRG (Kent and East Sussex Canal Restoration Group) for their work last weekend, when they spread 2 loads of topsoil and planted over 200 trees and shrubs. It's looking great! 👍🏼 More information here: http://www.weyandarun.co.uk/latestnews.php?id=%2098

🔔🔔🔔MAKE A DAY OF IT!!! 🔔🔔🔔 Three special WACT events have been arranged for the morning of Saturday, April 23rd, prior to the AGM in the afternoon. • A Guided walk to Malham & Rowner Locks - starts at 10.30am in the Bellmans Auctioneers’ car park on the B2133 at Newpound Common, near Wisborough Green (RH14 0AZ). We have permission for members to park at Bellmans. The route goes to Paplands, Rowner, Malham and Malham Farm and then back along the Wey-South Path to the car park. •A Guided walk to Gennets Bridge Lock- meet at 11am at the Canal Centre in Loxwood, behind the Onslow Arms on the B2133 (RH14 0RD), to walk to the lock. • Can you help in a support role? Members who freely give their time to restoration projects are responsible for the huge amount done so far to bring the canal back to life. Are you less active now than you used to be but still willing to offer the Trust help by volunteering for restoration support? Potential volunteers can meet WACT officers in The Stanley Room at the Billingshurst Centre from 11.30am to 2pm. Why not come for a friendly chat – no commitment – about what you could do, in your own time and mostly at home. There are also opportunities to get out and about on WACT business that don’t involve heavy work and huge amounts of mud. Examples of jobs that could be done are: Helping organise the visits of our Mobile Display Vehicle (MDV). Supporting the fundraising team by finding sources of grants and donations. Assisting in the organisation of working parties. Helping to organise the catering arrangements for special events, boat rallies etc. Identifying award opportunities and applying on behalf of our band of stalwarts. Assisting with project planning, surveys and obtaining building consent. Manning our stands and the MDV at events ranging from village fetes to the Surrey County Show. More information and registration for all these events here: http://www.crm.weyandarun.co.uk/content/make-day-it

New Compasses Bridge opens to traffic on schedule!!!! 👏🏼💪🏼👏🏼 Volunteers and contractors met a tight deadline to get the new Compasses Bridge at Alfold opened to traffic on Thursday, March 31st. They successfully realigned the entrance road to the Dunsfold Park airport and business complex across the bridge over the Easter weekend, completing phase one of the project. Project engineer Tony Ford commented: “Our volunteers and visiting groups have worked tirelessly to achieve the critical date for the road changeover. It needed to happen on time to mesh with the aerodrome’s busy events schedule.” Volunteers worked with contractors CJ Thorne on the realignment and surfacing, moving the road off the 1930s concrete causeway which blocks the canal. Work on the project to replace the causeway and open nearly a mile of the canal’s Summit Level to navigation began 15 months ago. Phase two – demolition of the causeway, re-creation of the canal cut and landscaping – is schedules to start in mid-April. The Trust plans to officially open the new bridge and restored canal section on Sunday, October 2nd, when it will be one of the locations for celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Wey & Arun Canal from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. http://www.weyandarun.co.uk/latestnews.php?id=%2098

This Easter weekend and next week are crucial for the Compasses Bridge project. The aim is to switch over road traffic to the new bridge so that the old concrete causeway can be demolished. First thing on Good Friday morning, the road was closed and WACT volunteers started work on moving the airfield security gates. Our contractors have already laid the first part of the new road surface and the final surface is due on Tuesday/Wednesday 29/30 March. Demolition of the causeway, which we now think was built in the 1930s, will be a slow and careful process; we do not know whether we may find remnants of the original canal bridge underneath the concrete.
