Mystery MOVIE on 35mm - No Clues! No Hints!

This is a terrific evening. Nobody knows what the film is going to be until the curtains open. Some great movies (A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE) and not-so-great (THE GREEN SLIME), but overall a fun night with cheaper tickets than usual. You can go for a refund, but ya did take ya choc-ice beforehand (as Rory Bremner as Barry Norman might have said :-)

Embrace of the Serpent

Here's an extraordinary cinematic experience. Looks great on the big screen, but pretty good I suppose on Blu-Ray...

THE SHALLOWS - Official Trailer #2 (HD)

THE SHALLOWS I don't think anybody will ever create a shark movie to rival JAWS, which remains the definitive shark attack movie. Although deserved praise has been heaped on the film-makers and Blake Lively in the lead role as the beleaguered surfer under attack, THE SHALLOWS is effectively the first five minutes of Spielberg's classic, expanded to fit a feature length. That said, it does provide some suspenseful moments and the visual effects are slicker and better than JAWS (but part of the reason JAWS was so effective was the fact the shark 'didn't' work technically). Lively is appealing in the lead role and the location is well shot. RATING: 7 OUT OF 10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgdxIlSuB70

The Right Stuff (1983) Official Trailer - Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid Movie HD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElzIPn1pXWE THE RIGHT STUFF (70MM) Screened at CHECK THE GATE, PRINCE CHARLES, 15th August 2016 Philip Kaufman's 1983 adaptation of the Tom Wolfe bestseller cracks along at a brisk pace for it's three-hours plus running time. The story of the Mercury seven astronauts is juxtaposed with Chuck Yeager's attempts to break and go beyond the sound barrier (Yeager also served as a key technical adviser on the film) and the effect they have on the world and their families. A virtual all-star cast, headed by Scott Glenn, Dennis Quaid, Sam Shepard, Barbara Hershey, Veronica Cartwright (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor) and Ed Harris, plus a number of supporting actors including the likes of Jeff Goldblum, are impeccable in their roles. There are so many great moments on show here and the opening lengthy sequence which chronicles Yeager's first attempt to break the sound barrier sets the film up for a riveting chronicle of the programme and the race to beat the Russians to the conquest of space. Excellent Oscar-winning score by Bill (ROCKY) Conti RATING: 9 OUT OF 10

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer (Official)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frdj1zb9sMY The official Trailer 2 for the upcoming movie. I am very excited about the film. Although we effectively know what is going to happen (didn't stop them doing those prequels, did it?), it certainly has more action per square inch than the prequels. I'm a STAR WARS fan through and through, so looking forward to it whatever happens :-)

IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD (1963) Screened at CHECK THE GATE, Prince Charles Cinema, August 14th 2016 Stanley Kramer's classic 1963 chase comedy remains as funny as it ever did, with a host of stars and comedy cameos (among them Jerry Lewis and The Three Stooges). Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante) crashes his car in the California desert and drops the subtle hint of a location where $350,000 in money (rich in 1963 terms) is buried, merely telling several witnesses (among them Sid Caesar and Mickey Rooney) before he literally kicks the bucket. Before long a whole group of people and hangers-on are after the same prize, pursued in turn by Captain Culpepper (Spencer Tracy) of the Santa Rosita Police Department.... A comedy that today refreshingly doesn't rely on profanity, sexual imagery and cheerful violence to entertain and remains as suitable for the family as it ever did, IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD. MAD WORLD has spectacular stunts, great moments of comedy delight and great performances. RATING: 9 OUT OF 10

The War of the Worlds (1953) Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9T9f3UbGuo WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) Screened as part of Check the Gate - Prince Charles Cinema, 10th August 2016 Byron Haskin's 1953 version of the HG Wells classic may only be fleetingly faithful to the original novel (and arguably the 2005 Cruise / Spielberg version is more so, though not set in it's original locale), but it's fusion of colour, sound and visual effects remains a truly influential experience. Set in California during the height of the nuclear age in the 1950s, a meteor crashes down near a small-town location where the residents discuss the possibility of putting up picnic tables. However, when the meteor unscrews and unleashes a devastating death heat ray, the military are called in to no avail. Professor Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry) and teacher Sylvia Van Buren (Ann Robinson) lead the fight back in science as the Martians begin sweeping across the US and the world.... Viewed for the first time on the big screen last night in my case, it is a fantastic experience and one to cherish. RATING : 8 OUT OF 10

FINDING DORY Entertaining sequel to FINDING NEMO, as Dory is the lost fish in the school as she battles to save herself and her friends, as well as an octopus determined to get transferred to Cleveland from California (?) Nice short before hand, everything you could want from a Pixar film and perfectly adequate for all ages. RATING: 8 OUT OF 10
