So today I was at the Scottish Licence Trade Association AGM, and took a further step to follow my dads footsteps, and took on the roll of Treasurer for our Trade Association for Scotland. Proud moment to follow in the footsteps of someone you have looked up to all your life.

So after a rough few days I was so so chuffed this morning to open an email from the Scottish Hotel Awards, where we won five out of the 6 awards open to the South West of Scotland about 6 weeks ago. The email was to inform me that the Townhead Hotel has now been nominated for Independent Hotel of the Year for the WHOLE of Scotland. The judges have narrowed it down to only 9 hotels to be nominated for this award out of I don't know how many, however to be even selected and nominated for this is just mind blowing. The effort that my staff put in here day in day out often goes unnoticed, and this now firmly outlines the determination and professionalism that they show. I can not praise you all enough, you just make me so so proud of you, very very proud :) Now its down to another secret inspection, a questionnaire and bio of us, and then an interview before the winner is decided.........so.............lets keep it going the way we do every day, and lets see what happens.

Our new menu will be out for next weekend, just in time for Mothers Day!! Many of our "Customer Favourites" still there, but some will have dropped off, but I am sure there will be lots for everyone's tastes, with some new dishes to try! With all ingredients being sourced as locally as possible, we are proud of the dishes we produce, and we just love to read what our customers say, and your feedback is always very much appreciated. Along with our new menu, we will have a "Something Different" section, where we will allow our Chefs to produce dishes which will allow them to demonstrate to you just what they can produce, and also this gives our customers a wider choice, which of course can only be a good thing. This part of the menu will change every month. We hope you will like our new menu, and we would love to hear what our customers have to say after they try it out. Also, we will be shutting down the separate restaurant which is in the side room, for refurbishment in the next 4 or 5 weeks. All in all it is exciting times here, and we look forward to the months ahead.

So today, the Scottish Licence Trade Association, the Scottish Tourism Alliance and the British Hospitality Association won a significant victory in the Scottish Parliament. We saw the Scottish Government and Derek MacKay finally listen to the problem of rates for our licence trade, and make an announcement that there would be a cap of 12.5% on rates increase for our licence trade. This has been a hard fought battle, and one which now will help secure many business's, and more importantly the security of jobs in our local area and Scotland as a whole. The talks still go on, with the first meeting tomorrow to discuss today's announcement in more detail. Below is the statement released by STA, the BHI, and the SLTA today. The Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA), the British Hospitality Association (BHA) and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA) have campaigned heavily over the last few months to bring about a reversal in the proposal to increase business rates. We wrote to the First Minister and other Ministers demanding a need for a review of the business rates revaluation and have had regular dialogue with Scottish Government to convey our views, concerns and evidence from businesses on the devastating impact of the proposed Commercial Rateable Values on Scotland’s tourism industry. We are hugely boosted and encouraged by the Finance Minister’s announcement of a 12.5% business rates cap for hospitality and licensed trade businesses of one year, a pragmatic move which will allow the Barclay Review group to report on its findings, and for a more equitable process for rates evaluation to be agreed and applied. We know that this afternoon’s news will be welcomed by tourism businesses across Scotland, businesses which yesterday were facing serious financial challenges post-April and in many cases, closure and the loss of many jobs. The STA, BHA and the SLTA will proceed with our planned meeting with Scottish Government Cabinet Ministers Derek Mackay and Keith Brown at 1.30pm tomorrow to discuss the Finance Minister’s relief package in more detail, and also the desired process to be followed by the Assessors before a new approach is introduced on 1st April 2018. Tourism has been acknowledged by Scottish Government as being “Scotland’s most important industry”; today’s announcement underlines and highlights the government’s support for our industry and acknowledges the importance of tourism as the main economic driver in Scotland. It is important that we as an industry continue to work together to bring about the changes that will enable our industry to prosper and grow and to support the creation of policies that will not only allow us to compete with the rest of the world, but put us on the front foot for getting ahead of the game. This is hugely encouraging news and will undoubtedly offer tourism businesses confidence to continue to deliver these quality, authentic experiences for visitors during what is set to be a busy year for our industry. We very much welcome today’s announcement and look forward to continuing our dialogue with Scottish Government, its agencies and tourism businesses over the coming weeks.
