Helping abused, abandoned and neglected cats since 1990! About Us

Our charity is based on the belief that all animals deserve a loving and comfortable home and meeting these needs are of the utmost importance. Our entire team is committed to getting results for the animals in our care and we all work towards the goal of creating a loving environment, whether in our care or in their new homes, our charity aims to promote health and well being in all the animals we care for.

The History

Animal Aid was founded in 1990 by Susan Geeleher and Kay Sheridan and was granted charitable status in September 1990 by the Charity Commission, registered charity no 1143133. Its main aims are to rescue abused and abandoned cats and to offer them a safe environment with any medical care that the animals require.

At first we rented 6 units from private boarding kennels in Melling; we eventually were able to rent all the units and build a cattery. As the volunteer base grew,  in 1992 we were offered a piece of land in Field Lane, Fazakerley at a peppercorn rent and we were able to build 12 kennels, a large cattery and a small administration unit.

In order to fund these activities we opened our charity shop on County Road, Walton, Liverpool in 1995. Unfortunately after 3 years at Field Lane, the owner sold the land for redevelopment and we had to move out. The cats are now housed  in a purpose built cattery. We ensure that any person wishing to adopt any of our animals has the necessary home checks to ensure a safe and loving environment before adoption is agreed.

The Charity relies on donations from the public and the income from the shop which is staffed entirely by volunteers - without their help we would not be able to function.

Remember lola who we brought in last week, aged 9 months and already has had three homes. Well today she went to her fourth and forever home with our very good friends Tracy and Alex. Lola is home for Christmas and that's all we ever wanted for her when she came to us last Monday after Tracy collected her for me from Birkenhead on Sunday night. Tracy fell completely in love with her amazing affection and she just knew she had to adopt her cuddle monster. Thanks girls you are wonderful. Merry Christmas to you all.

Little Snowflake has arrived at our Rescue today .She was being fed by an old lady who's sadly passed away recently leaving Snowflake without the human who cared for her .She had a bed in the shed and regular meals but was homeless and now she's safe and warm with us now. Quiet and shy she's adjusting to her new environment and hopefully some kind family will share their home with her after New Year. Welcome to the Animal Aid family Snowflake.

You may remember we received a plea for us to help two brother's aged eighteen years old who's elderly owner was in her final days of life . She wanted her boys to be safe and her niece gave her the news that we were taking the boys in. The old lady died later that same day. We made an appeal to ask if someone would consider offering our grand oldies a home, unsure if we would be successful we waited in hope. Two of our greatest friends Roland and Ann Caffrey saw Sam and Sioux on our appeal post . The very next day the boys were in their new home. The boys were like teenagers and settled in really well , keeping Ro on his toes with them running off down the garden at every opportunity! The past few weeks Sam , on the right , has deteriorated and lost weight so a trip to the vets was arranged and many tests were done, the worst news was to come, Sam's little body was riddled with cancer. He was sent over Rainbow Bridge today with his mum and dad by his side and now they are left heartbroken. Ro and Ann you are two of the most compassionate, devoted people I know. You both gave not only your home, but your whole life and time to caring for the boys so their twilight years would be full of love and comfort. When you told me the saddest news tonight I knew how heartbroken you both will be but please take comfort in knowing Sam had the best mum and dad he could of wished for and his first mum will be so happy to see one of her boys again . Everyone at Animal Aid send our deepest condolences and share your loss . Run with the butterflies little daddy's boy.

One very special girl has now found her perfect family tonight. Becky who fell in love with her weeks ago has taken her home finally! Becky is a great friend of ours and we are delighted that Shortcake is in her very first home. She has a new best friend too Olaf, who keeps hiding at the minute! To say this kitten is so worthy of this opportunity is just putting it mildly. She lost an eye after infection and has lived her entire life of seven months in our care . Thankyou to Becky, John and Libby and of course Olaf . Here she is on her way home today.

Peppercorn's eyes are open now and he's began to crawl around. His mum Nutmeg is brilliant with him and she adores her little bundle of joy. We sit and watch her be so gentle with him and it's just beautiful.

We have received not only the most generous gifts for our furry friends at Animal Aid but also lots of amazing support too . The past weeks has overwhelmed us by the kindness of people who have helped our Rescue in so many different ways. We are proud of our work and to know so many of you share our passion for so many cats and kittens is just heartwarming. So many ways you have helped from food deliveries and gifts for our furry friends but also kindness of words too. To sit and write a story of loss and pain is always made easier by your wonderful words of comfort and support . Rescue is full of so many highs but we share the lows too and we always feel we share the pain to people who care too . May I take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and care you show for our Rescue. We need you when times are tough and you never let us down. I do all the admin on here, stories, videos, appeals etc but it's a team of dedicated men and women who keep us going. Huge thankyou to all our amazing Animal Aid family. Yesterday morning we were enjoying love and happiness with our lovely volunteers and staff but we had some devastating news too. I'm not going to share and cause upset as I know how much you care deeply about our cats. We want to welcome Christmas with hope and love . Merry Christmas to you all and all your furry family.
