Fife Heritage Railway
Description
The Fife Heritage Railway restore steam and diesel locomotives providing open days and train rides to the public on selected days. Established in 1992, the Kingdom of Fife Railway Preservation Society is a registered charity which is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Our aim is to preserve Fife’s railway heritage.
We own a 21 acre former railway marshaling yard and have constructed half a mile of track plus substantial sidings.
Our restoration work is conducted in the “Colin Munro” shed which is well equipped with engineering machinery and work space.
As a heritage railway, we are open to visitors on selected days and provide trips along the line pulled by one of our restored locomotives.
We always welcome people wanting to get involved, be it rebuilding locomotives, providing refreshments or even joining as a non-working member, everyone is welcome!

facebook.comHere's a small working update from Kirkland yard. Plans are currently ongoing for our future expansion and development, along with locating another steam locomotive for restoration. It's an exciting year for us, with everything we have in the pipeline. Finally our Rosyth diesel has been repaired after a long 10 months out of service. All our diesel locomotives are currently undergoing inspection to certify they are running safe. Another diesel is currently seeing some love, the 440hp NBL is receiving a lick of paint to help preserve for future plans. Forth is as good as ever, we had a fresh supply of coal recently through our friends at SRPS and it is burning very well. making life on the footplate a lot easier and enjoyable! After a small issue of running a hot box on it's inaugural run, the NSB was fixed in time for the Leven Rally and has been running very well. A much smoother ride up the line compared to the shark brake van. Out in the yard we have been undertaking a huge tidying plan to maxinmise our space and make the place look a bit neater. So much so that our Dubbie Pub boiler now stands desolate, awaiting to be put back into the frames to serve as a static display. Unfortunately this locomotive is not an option for restoration at this time, unless a large sum of cash is raised. Also out in the yard, our shop is receiving a much needed coat of paint and will be undergoing some redevelopment shortly. Our latest project is our goods van/waiting room conversion. With inner wooden cladding now applied along with the roof, doors are now being made to fit. Next step will be to acquire roofing felt to apply and give better protection from the elements. The next open day is on 30th July where Forth will once again be in steam to give rides. Also we will once again be rolling out the highly successful 'Driver for a Fiver' where guests will get the chance to drive our diesel locomotive 'River Eden'. Come on down for a fantastic fun day!
June is over and we come crashing into the summer of July, school holidays are on and there's plenty of fun to be had. It's been a quiet few days at Kirkland while we have been recovering from the Leven Rally but now the show goes on and we begin planning our next open day. Word on the street is that driver for a fiver will be rolling out again on Sunday 30th, watch this space!
What a whirlwind of a weekend, the showground is now quiet, Forth is out of steam, all the cake eaten and we've finally had a rest. The 2017 Leven Rally has now passed and it has been a spectacular event. We saw vehicles from all ages and walks of life descend on our showground for the chance of winning a ribbon. Along with an estimated 2000 visitors this was the event of the year for FHR and the work our small core of volunteers has put in has been outstanding. Soon we will begin planning next years event, we will definitely need more help with it's organisation, if you want to be a part of it all please get in touch! Another outstanding success was the introduction of Driver for a Fiver, with plenty of smiling faces coming off the footplate of River Eden! Due to the success and being booked solid, we intend to bring this activity out again for future open days, along with considering driver experience packages for next season. Watch this space! We would like to thank the following people and companies for their support: All our staff and volunteers Hamish Gordon Coaches http://www.hamishgordoncoaches.co.uk/ - Main event sponsor James Rankin - Program designer Fife Council Leven (1370) Air Training Corps Scottish Railway Preservation Society Shed47 Railway Restoration Group Carnegie American Football Club Andrew Cook Group Our next running day will be on Sunday 29th July, we hope to see you then. For now please share your pictures of the rally with us, we'd love to see it through your eyes.
Thought I'd make this one a little more personal. Hi, I'm Anthony and along with running the day to day business of FHR and firing Forth, I also moderate the social media. I want to say a huge thank you to our small core of volunteers who have helped out this week and weekend. Myself and a couple of others have been on site since 5pm Friday until now, accruing about 9 hours of sleep, just to make sure the Leven Rally happened. We have also had a small number of volunteers sparing their precious time and I'd like to thank all of you also. Behind the scenes there's been a lot of smiling, laughing, shouting and swearing. It's been tough but it has happened. For the rally next year there will be changes and plenty more happening to make this the event of the year for Leven. I hope to see many more visitors, vehicles and attractions next year. If we can all club in together as a community, we can make this one hell of an event. But for me now, it's a time for relaxation and a rest before reality kicks back in tomorrow. There will be plenty of Rally updates this week, please feel free to share your experiences. Best wishes. Anthony.
Trophies are in place, Forth is warming up, showground is clear. Who's coming tomorrow??? #levenrally
Wondering how to get to our yard? Here is an image and some instructions to help! From Windygates Road (blue route): Turn off at the traffic lights and head down Glenlyon road towards Leven over the mini roundabout. When you reach the next roundabout, take the third exit onto Leven Vale (red route) and follow this for 100 yards to the junction, turn right at the junction and immediately bear left to the top of the road. You will see a small grassy field with football posts, follow this dirt track and it will lead you into our showground. From Leven Bus Station (green route): Heading along the A955 take the second exit on the roudabout towards Riverside Retail park, head straight over the next roundabout passing Sainsburys petrol station on your left which will lead you to Leven Vale roundabout, take the first exit and follow the red route as described above.
