facebook.comBrilliant activist-journalist filmmakers Reel News are going to cover the democratic crisis in Catalonia. We just donated to help them do it - please share and, if you can afford it, chuck in a few bob too: Reel News will be going to Barcelona next week to produce videos and photoreports of the momentous events unfolding there, including whatever happens on the planned referendum day on October 1st and the general strike on October 4th - but we need your help. We need to raise £1,000 to pay for travel and accommodation for two of us and in return we'll undertake to produce videos and photoreports as events unfold. Many thanks to Finsbury Park RMT for getting the ball rolling with a donation of £100 - if you or your union branch can help too (no amount too small!) please click on the link below (after you've clicked, go down to the bottom of the page and press the "Donate" button), or send a cheque payable to Reel News to: 1 Galsworthy Terrace, London N16 0TS. Thanks in advance to everyone who can help! http://reelnews.co.uk/donationssubscriptions/

Film Screening and Q&A with co-director Hamja Ahsan. Liverpool & Hillsborough Solidarity zine collection (1981-2017) is an ongoing project looking at zines under Thatcher's Britain. The death of 96 Liverpool football fans crushed at the FA Cup semi-final in Yorkshire, with a further 766 injuries, and countless thousands of friends and families traumatised, stands as the worst police cover-up in British history. The film and installation explore how Zines showed the truth about Hillsborough decades before the MSM and law courts. They were also a medium through which solidarity was built. Zine humour helped survivors to deal with the trauma and subverted the demonisation of the city of Liverpool. The collection also explores the zine affirming working-class Scouse identity. Ali Russell is a filmmaker and activist based in UK of Iranian & Scottish heritage, directed in collaboration with Hamja Ahsan. The directors have worker closely with survivors of the disaster and Hillsborough Justice Campaign on this project. The film on Hillsborough and fanzines is 25 minutes long.

We're branching out a little bit at the zine fair this year with all sorts of brand new additions to make the day even more spectular than previous years (and in the process making it pretty difficult to top it next time). One of the exciting new things we're introducing is Reclaiming The Hides, a guided bird walk with a difference! Instead of identifying as many species as possible or hunting down a migrating rarity, the objective will be to explore the radical examples set by birds, and to reframe birdwatching as an act that, while not revolutionary in itself, is one worthy of anyone who wants to build a better world (or just turn their back on the one we have already messed up). There are limited spaces available, so make sure you book your space on the tour at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/reclaiming-the-hides-a-radical-birdwalk-leeds-tickets-37048932354
Activists shut down Ffos-y-Fran, Britain's largest opencast coal mine, for a day in April. They were arrested and stung with a £10,000 compensation order. These heroes deserve support, and others like them need to know that supporters will have their back in future. We've just donated to help cover the 10 grand. Please share the link and, if you have a few bob you can spare, please chip in too. https://www.chuffed.org/project/help-pay-penalty
BOOKINGS FOR LEEDS ZINE FAIR 2017 ARE NOW OFFICIALLY CLOSED. We have reached capacity and have taken down the "Get Involved" link. A few people have emailed us over the weekend asking if we still have space and we will reply imminently. Anyone who asks for a stall will be added to a list of people to contact if any stallholders drop out, but we will contact those who got in touch first first so please do not get your hopes up too much! Whether you have a stall or not, please do pop along, its going to be a mega day.
We've decided we're going to give all you lucky people a bit of a special deal at the zine fair! Before 1pm, if you bring pre-printed/drawn A3 artwork, we will do a run of posters for you for the measly cost of £5 per riso colour! Info on how to set up your artwork is available here: http://footprinters.co.uk/colourriso.html
