📺 Who's been keeping up with #Poldark? We love a good period drama but this season really got us hooked! It was hard not to feel sorry for George Warleggan... A key theme of this series has been the 18th century approach to madness/lunacy. Some of it has been uncomfortable viewing but did the show get you thinking about the history of mental health? How did you feel about George's treatment? #HistMed #MentalHealth #PeriodDrama #RossPoldark #18thCentury #Madness #Lunacy #DrEnys #BBC Image: © Mammoth Screen Limited

Meet Mary Bramall... she was likely a patient of Dr. J A Smith in about 1821. Smith's inclination to paint these mesmerising watercolours of his patients is slightly out of the ordinary but they give us invaluable insight into how we began to understand more about medicine. 🖌️🎨 It's probably safe to say that Mary wasn't thrilled about this macabre portrait of her! You can see that she is unfortunately suffering from severe erosion of the left eye socket. Scan a little further down and you'll just be able to make out Smith's inscription 'carcinoma', diagnosing Mary with what seems to be an aggressive form of cancer. You'll be able to see more incredible highlights from our collection when we reopen next year! 🏛️😀 #Museumcollections #Objects #Medicalart #Painting #Watercolours #Histmed #Museums #ThackrayTransformation #Redevelopment #Culturematters

It's #WorldPhotographyDay! 📸 We have so many photographs in our collection but when we come across #candid shots like this one, we are reminded of the power of photography. This is Nurse Margaret Denton seated outside St James' Hospital in 1961. Captured is a moment in Margaret's life made into a material, tangible thing. Is she squinting at the sun or laughing at the photographer? Sneak peeks of everyday histories mean beautiful moments such as these are not lost to the principle order of time. #WorldPhotographyDay2019 #Photography #Candidshot #Histmed #Nurse #Medicine

Anyone who's seen the Google Doodle this morning will know that it's Louisa Aldrich-Blake's 154th birthday today! 🎉 A woman of many firsts, she received a Master of Surgery in 1895 making her the only woman at the time to hold this degree. During her life, she developed innovative surgical techniques, saved the lives of soldiers during World War I, and paved the way for other women wanting to enter the medical profession. What an amazing lady! 👩⚕️💃
