Being around trees good for your immune system, find scientists An eight-year study has found that time spent in forest landscapes is measurably good for our health. Spending periods of time in the woods significantly increased the activity of subjects’ natural killer (NK) cells, which help the body’s defences against viral infection and tumour growth. The cause seems to be oils, called phyoncide, which are transpired by trees and appear to help our immune function when inhaled. This study adds to the growing body of evidence showing that time spent outdoors is beneficial to our physical and mental health. The Independent (19 October 2016) Find out how Soil Association Certification Forestry's work is helping make the forestry sector more sustainable.

This week Waitrose announced it will move away from GM soya in animal feed, switching to sources of soya which have been farmed responsibly in the Danube region. This marks the most significant move in the UK against the use of GM crops since 1999, when British supermarkets took the 70 per cent of processed food that contained GM off their shelves. Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director, said: “GM soya from Latin America is linked to rainforest destruction, so sourcing non-GM soya from the Danube region, and using more UK-grown protein crops, is good for the climate, good for UK farmers, and good for consumers. We expect other retailers to follow Waitrose's lead.” Daily Mail (2 November 2016) Read more about why Waitrose's decision is the biggest blow to GM crops this century.
