Taxman collects record high £4.7bn in inheritance tax

A massive £4.7 BILLION was collected in Inheritance Tax in the year 2015-2016, a 22% increase on the previous year and the highest amount of IHT ever.

How banks are turning power of attorney into a nightmare

Such a shame to see that although a framework has been provided for people to make decisions via a trusted person if they lose capacity, institutions are making life difficult for the chosen representatives. Managing someone else's finances is a full time job and not something to be taken lightly. Banks should be making Attorney's lives easier, not more difficult.

It's always a shame when an opportunity to educate or inform is missed by the media, in this case the Daily Mail. Updating your Will is of course a good thing to do, but it doesn't constitute planning for dementia and the care you would want during your lifetime if you suffer from it. To set out your wishes relating to this you need a Health and Welfare Power of Attorney, which can enable people to make decisions for you during your lifetime if you lose the capacity to do so. A Will can only direct assets after your death. We're not sure whether Angela has been misquoted or if her comments have been taken out of context, but planning for those things that we don't like to think about is really important and everyone should put the appropriate paperwork in place.
