East London five-piece folk band Stick In The Wheel are headed by singer Nicola Kearey, and guitarist/producer Ian Carter. Their debut “From Here”(2015) was fRoots magazine Album of the Year and a MOJO Folk Album of the Year, with four BBC Folk Award nominations since their inception in 2013. Known for Kearey’s fierce, working-class delivery, this is culturally and politically switched on music, with the group being widely commended for their timely appraisal of English Folk, and their skill in telling stories through song that reconnect modern audiences to the past - drawing unexpected parallels between then and now. Their second album 'Follow Me True' is released on 26th January 2018. The songs within examine rituals and cycles, our inherent power to change ourselves and the world around us, the past repeating itself, ghosts and death, land and place, thieves and beggars. It continues to question the notion of what folk music is, and what it means in 2018. The new album expands the radical sound of their debut to include electronic and found sounds, using a broader sonic palette to create a greater depth full of layers and meaning, yet at the same time remaining totally connected with the tradition. £11 (£10 discounted)

Gary Fletcher is an English singer, songwriter and guitarist who became interested in blues music in the late 1960s. He played in a number of bands including the cult blues/rock band Sam Apple Pie and, in 1978 he joined The Wildcats, where he met Dave Kelly, who suggested him as bassist when Kelly, Paul Jones, Tom McGuinness and Hughie Flint formed The Blues Band in 1979. Gary has remained with The Blues Band from its inception, but he has undertaken several side projects, writing and recording with other musicians, including The Dave Kelly Band, Christine Collister, The Travelling Gentlemen, and his own creation, The Gary Fletcher Band, which appears in a number of different guises. These include the Acoustic Band which features himself, Alan Glen and Tom Leary. Alan has played with The Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, amongst others, as well as his own band, The Barcodes. Tom is probably best known for his work with Feast of Fiddles but he has also played with Little Johnny England, Lindisfarne and the Albion Morris Band, amongst others. These three fine, experienced musicians, from diverse backgrounds, will provide us with a fascinating evening of original and traditional acoustic music. £11 (£10 discounted)

Crooked Weather hail from the depths of East Yorkshire, however, since their inception, the band have been living a nomadic life on the road touring England, Ireland, Holland, France, Australia, New Zealand and America. Their music has evolved as they have, influenced by the places they’ve seen and the people they’ve met on their travels. With the lilting harmonies of Holly and Will at the core, augmented by Tom and Dave, a fierce rhythm section, their original music, steeped in the folk revival of the late 60's, has a raw, modern edge, driven by interweaving guitars, ethereal harmonies and driving drums. Their unique blend of classic and new folk makes for a delightful sound. Melodic and magnificent, their music has so much heart it’s almost alive. “Crooked Weather come from the same fertile ground which gave the world David Crosby’s immortal album ‘If I Could Only Remember My Name’. They are indie meets World music meets traditional British folk. Think a contemporary Incredible String Band with a 21st century mindset.” – Sid Griffin, The Coal Porters/Bob Dylan Biographer £10

Details Miranda Sykes, the acclaimed singer and bassist with ‘Show of Hands’ is returning to her roots. After a career spanning over 20 years, during which time she has played with many of the top musicians and singers within the folk world, she will be touring as she started out: one woman, one bass, and one guitar. Borrowed Places is a project that draws its inspiration primarily from the songs and landscapes of her native Lincolnshire but seen through the eyes of someone who has lived away for many years. The themes are not specific; the land changes, it grows, it shrinks, it adapts and it resists but most of all it lives and breathes. With her sensational voice, and accompanying herself, Miranda interprets the soul of the land and takes her audience on a journey that resonates with us all, wherever we live and it is one you won’t want to miss. £12 (£11 discounted)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Oka Vanga gig is at St Bart's Church Hall in Otford High Street rather than at the usual venue in Kemsing. The latter is not available to us due to a booking mix up. St Bart's is a really nice little hall, slightly smaller than St Edith, but it won't hinder your enjoyment of the gig in any way. Doors are at 7.30 pm as usual but the bar won't be open in advance as we have limited set up time. And while we're on the subject, a last call for you all to come along to this one, it's going to be a really good night we promise!

Folk-pop legend Gerry Colvin must be one of the most endearing and energetic musicians on the planet, just as much at home playing small clubs as he is supporting Status Quo on tour. This multi-talented singer-songwriter performs all his own material, combining catchy melodies with thoughtful lyrics on love, society, angst and Johnny Cash! His be-suited on stage performance combines Frank Sinatra, Lee Evans, and the aforementioned Man in Black. Genius? Madcap? Maverick? Yes, all of these things… and a lot, lot more. With his regular musical partners Jerome Davies, double bass, Trish Power, accordion, and Lyndon Webb on guitar, Gerry will be playing songs from his eighth CD “Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other” as well as favourites from his previous recordings. Gerry is an incredible showman, an impressive musician, a clever wordsmith and a great raconteur, and if you had to say just one thing about him, it's that you certainly get your money's worth! Just expect a great night’s entertainment from this extraordinary performer. Once seen, never forgotten. Fun guaranteed. Tickets £12.00 full price, £11.00 discounted for newsletter readers http://gerrycolvin.co.uk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEicxou88gg Kid Friendly
