Every now and again an instrument just sings. You know the ones. The standard good student instrument that somehow just plays easy. effortlessly and has a huge tone.It sort of punches above its weight Well today one such instrument walked in and when someone plays it, it will walk right on out. Believe me. This is a Trevor James 10EX series 1. It has the split E Mech etc So nothing unusual in the spec BUT ITS PLAYS ..WOW. Does it play. If you are thinking of upgrading or want to play this for yourself pop in but do it soon as the teachers who come in will try it will be telling their students to buy it. oh the price £220....

We are doing some serious Harmonica work now so i wanted to share with you one of my little tools of the trade that I made to help me out. Now there are many things that make a harmonica "good" and one "not so good". There are reasons why a cheap harmonica is cheap and some not so cheap. My job i suppose is to show people the difference and in showing them, physically, you may choose next time to get a better instrument. So here is my "embossing magnifier". It would be nice to have a better name so any recommendations would be gratefully received. How does it work ?. Well the gap between the reed ( the bit that flaps about when you blow into a harmonica and the reed plate hole is very important. Too big a gap and the air rushes past the reed, Too small a gap and the reed gets stuck in the hole. Irregular reed gap and the air goes past the reed with irregular speed and again messes with the reed. To fix all these. first stop is to get a good harmonica. Most good makes ie Seydel,Hohner, Suzuki etc have good repeatable processes, however some harmonicas from even the good manufacturers have various success with reed gaps so may need embossing. ie gap reducing /adjusting. This tool can see the gap by using a cheap laptop microscope and a light table. The results are very precise to seeing the gap. Here are some snap shoots of a cheap chinese reed plate and a Hohner 360. A well embossed reed plate can make bends and overblows easy.

There are a couple of real Harmonica "big hitters" in the blues world. The Suzuki Manji, The Seydel Session Steel and the Hohner Rockets. We have all 3 in stock in all popular keys. They are all different. Stainless steel reeds vs Brass, Vented cover plates vs sealed, Comb material, reed plate thickness, reed spread etc etc, So you see all harmonicas are not born equal. Why not pop into the shop this weekend and see for yourself.

Harmonica players out there with know of the Seydel company. I came across these at the German music fair a few months ago and bought this little harp as a sort of souvenir of my trip. It was also the cheapest harmonica they did. but that's besides the point . Anyways it comes in a tin. Like a tin of soup. But once you get it out it really is not a toy. infact I havent put it down since i got it. Its amazing. The stainless reeds gives it a real buzz. If you are thinking of either a present for someone that already plays harp or you want to get into it yourself then you cannot go wrong in getting one of these. It actually overblows on the 5th hole right out of the box. Its my tip for success and its only £19.95 from the shop....check out our super large range of harps on our website.

This is a big job on the bench this week. Its going to be a lot of work so i will get to it as a when. Basically the body is bent to hell. All the tone holes are now not round and its a sorry state of affairs. It was used professionally for many years and was played on a few top ten hits when there was a top ten hit parade. Now after all these years its found itself at our door. It was told that it was not needed anymore, that nothing could be done to make it play again. Well, We will make it play and play great. your never too old. The sax I mean, not me.... blooming cheek...

Here is a little slide show of a restoration of a vintage Hohner Chromonica Deluxe I Harmonica I did this week. Its a piece of retro art so i decided to do it as a way of showing you guys whats involved in a standard restoration of a Chromatic Harmonica. This is job where the cost to do the restoration far exceeds the cost of replacing the instrument. There are a load of these instruments on ebay for pennies but once they are restored I think you will agree they are worth saving. This now plays like new. So what did we do 1)strip and clean the instrument 2)Treat the Pearwood comb with stabilising food safe acrylic. 3)flat sand the comb 4)Remove all windsavers and clean reed plates 5)Buff cover plates 6) Black nitro paint the embossing 7)Replace ALL windsavers 8) replace all pins with screws x8 for air tight assemble to the comb 9)Tune every reed to 442 10) reassemble & Test Hours taken 8. At £25 per hour = £200. To sell in the shop we would get around £60. = loss of £140 BUT what a lovely instrument and i feel much better for doing it. What a great job I have. Pop in the shop if you want to have a play. This would make a great gift for someone. enjoy
