The models, scenes and decorations etc. are either sponge or sugar fondant,  and wherever possible are all edible, occasionally skewer type supports may be used in some modelling.  Tiered cakes have dowel or tube supports.  

Character cake toppers in plastic, porcelain, wood etc. are also very popular and can be used on cakes.
