At the start of term Wycombe High School and Martin Etherington, Father of the deceased Leo Etherington, issued a joint complaint to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) relating to inaccurate, misleading and insensitive media reporting of the inquest into Leo’s death, held on 30th August 2017. We can now update you on the outcome of this complaint. Every single national media outlet that is a member of IPSO and which published a report on the inquest has now amended factual inaccuracies in their report(s), and published a correction or clarification, many also including apologies for the distress caused by inaccuracies in their reports. Donations have also been made to the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) as Martin Etherington’s chosen charity. Sadly, the anguish that these reports caused to Leo’s family and to members of our school community cannot be undone, however, the IPSO complaint process has now been successfully concluded.

The Times has issued a correction in yesterday's edition of the paper (6 September) regarding its article on the inquest into the death of Leo Etherington. The Times clarifies: "We said he had been refused permission to change his name officially at school. We have been asked to make clear that the request was made two years before Leo's death, and that although names cannot be legally changed before the age of 16 the school allows students to be called by chosen alternative names".
