When ill health occurs in the workplace early prevention is likely to be more cost-effective than intervening when the problem becomes critical. Both employees and employers have a duty to take action on the first signs of poor health; the former should inform managers immediately if they begin to feel unwell and the latter should reasonably accommodate doctor’s appointments and sick days. Ignoring a health problem – however slight it may be – could ultimately result in longer recovery times, greater costs and worse company morale.
