Technological advances are not something that happen often in falconry! However recently a telemetry system that uses GPS was launched. Not only will this system track an errant bird - but it will plot the flight in real time on a google earth image. We had a go with it on Atlas the Steller's Sea Eagle this afternoon. Good eh?

Well - that's the British Falconry Fair packed up and tidied away. What an utterly awesome few days. The whole thing has made me incredibly proud to be a falconer. The chance to share my passion with thousands of like minded people was a true honour. Visitors numbers were way up on previous years and every single trader reported higher than expected sales. The stand holders did a wonderful job of making their stands look wonderful. We owe a debt of gratitude to so many people. The NCBP staff stepped things up a notch to make the centre look so great. The bird staff pulled out all the stops to make the flying demos so brilliant. Thanks to Katie, Sarah, Average Dan, Laura and Ben. We are fortunate to have a great team of committed volunteers. They do so much to make our events run so smoothly. Linda, Nick, Tess, Jake, Andy, Molly, Keith and Lemon Drizzle Lyn - i am proud to breathe the same air as you guys. You rock. The catering staff from the Fat Chef Company were their normal efficient selves - they ran the BBQ with staggering efficiency. We were fortunate to have some of the best demo falconers in the business with us. Chris Johnson, George Thomson,Xavier Morel, Gary "up Tone" Biddiss, Anthony Reilley, Shane Griffiths and lastly Jemima Parry-Jones - you all raised the bar this year. Thank you all for coming and playing such a huge part in proceedings. Simon Jewitt did a great job with his dog training demo. Mark Naguib's vet seminars had people queuing out of the door! The Yorkshire Hawking Club ran the weathering for visiting hawks with their usual aplomb and the eagle group made the eagle weathering look world class. The visitors were lovely. Thank you for not dropping litter!! We litter picked this morning and didn't even fill a bin bag. Many, many thanks to Jake and Raffa Duncombe. We had so many stand booking that we had to extend out into their parklands. Hope you both enjoyed watching Atlas go intergalactic on the Monday! Adam Fry and Bob Dalton did sterling work in convincing such an amazing array of stand holders to attend. But, as normal, the biggest debt of gratitude we owe is to the birds themselves. The fair always was about them - and they did us proud. It's probably unfair to single out any individuals - but Burr Knot (Common Buzzard), Karis (Saker), Carlton (Af Fish Eagle) and Atlas (Steller's Sea Eagle) all put on truly world class and exceptional performances. I can't even start to explain how tired i am right now. So from me and my fellow organisers - good night and we'll hopefully see many of you at the Robara Event at Duncombe in late September 2017. We've been debating whether to even mention this - but it has got way to exciting to keep it a secret any longer. "Inowashi" our female Steller's Sea Eagle is busy incubating 2 eggs. She has never laid before and the male she is in with is only just old enough to breed. Steller's Sea Eagles are the largest eagle in the world and are one of the most incredible creatures on the planet. They have the biggest beak of any bird of prey too! They are listed as being a Vunerable species. This is partly down to their very restricted range on the NE coast of Siberia and northern Japan. They are very sensitive to climate change and an oil spill could be a disaster for them. They are a fish eating eagle. Like most fish eagles they are happy to both scavenge dead fish and steal fish from other predators; as well as snatch fish from the surface of the water. It is thought that their huge beak is to enable them to tear apart frozen fish in the winter. We have no idea if these eggs are fertile. Both eagles are in full breeding condition and are very aggressive. So we are going to leave them to it and hope for the best. You may be able to spot the top of the female's head as she incubates on the nest ledge. If they get agitated when you are in front of the aviary - please move away. Breeding species like this is why we are here - it's our number 1 priority! Keep your fingers crossed - maybe in early April we'll be hearing the pitter patter of tiny talons :-)
