I have just started running cookery courses again (we used to do them at my cafe and I have organised lots in the past when I was working as a Five a Day Co-ordinator for the NHS) so I thought I would share the recipes here. All the food was made with seasonal, local, organic produce from Pea Pod Veg… [ 1,186 more word ] https://veganmumandbaby.wordpress.com/2016/09/19/vegan-cookery-classes

Places near playgrounds in Brighton!

This week we went on a little pre birthday trip to Brighton. I wanted to try out some new places I'd never been before and so we decided to go to Rootcandi which is completely vegan and has only been open a few months. It is on Western Rd, so is a bit further to walk to from the train station than some of the other veggie cafes but well worth the journey. Amazing Indian Fusion food in Bexhill

The Vegan Mum and Baby can't be bought but if anyone wants to invite us to a 5-course complimentary meal with drinks we're not going to refuse. We received such an invite recently to a press event at The Culinaire in Bexhill. I already knew we were in for a treat as I has tried out the chef Kuldeep's food when he ran a pop up at The Observer Building. The vegan mum and baby guide to Edinburgh

We recently went on a short visit to Edinburgh for work, so for the purposes of research I thought I should eat out in as many places as possible to check them out. First we started with brunch at Kitchen East at Century General Store. This is run by my friend Polly so I am a bit biased but I have to say it was delicious. Vegan hot dogs in Hastings!

We were very excited to be invited to test out the new vegan hot dogs at the recently opened Palace Beer Hall and Hotdog Emporium. This is on the site of the old Pig in Paradise and all I can say is it's a great improvement. If gentrification means you can go out somewhere that doesn't smell of piss and cleaning fluid then I'm all for it! Hooray for vegan coleslaw!

I am very excited as my babba has actually eaten a raw vegetable, well lots of them, all thanks to the wonder of coleslaw. Despite being a full fledged vegan she doesn't actually like eating vegetables yet and mainly survives on nuts, carbohydrate and beans. Lots of other people seems to worry a lot about the lack of vegetable eating at this age but I think there must be a perfectly logical reason for it, we just don't know what it is yet. Photos from Love Food Cafe's post

My FB feed has been filled up with pictures of jammie dodgers in the last week from various vegan pages and groups, including The Vegan Society page. Vegans are up in arms because the recipe of this popular biscuit is to be reformulated to include milk. Whilst I totally agree this shouldn't happen and that more cows will suffer if milk is added to the biscuit's ingredients. What I can't understand is why vegans and vegan organisations are going to the trouble of creating, signing and sharing a petition about the jammie dodger without also raising the issue of palm oil and asking the manufacturers to remove that from the recipe too. Clearing land for oil palm plantations has led to widespread deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia as well as other regions. This has pushed many species to the brink of extinction, such as rhinos, elephants, orang-utans and tigers. I am pretty astounded that The Vegan Society can portray the jammie dodger as a harmless treat when it states that "Jammie Dodgers aren't unhealthy snacks vegans are better off without when you think about it. This is a widely available biscuit that allows vegans to share food with their non-vegan friends and families, a symbol that demonstrates that vegan food is delicious, easy, accessible." Is a highly processed, sickly sweet biscuit that has no nutritional benefits really something we should aspire to as a symbol of veganism? Like anyone else I am no saint and occasionally I want to binge on junk food. I am also aware that all food production has an impact on the environment somewhere along the line but how can anyone justify destroying the world's rainforests to produce something that serves to do nothing but satisfy a short-term sugar craving and contributes to diet-related diseases such as obesity. As more and more ready made vegan foods come on to the market it seems that to criticise them on any vegan forum these days is a crime. Vegans feel they should be allowed to be unhealthy and enjoy eating processed foods like anyone else. But there is no point in turning a blind eye to the ingredients and production methods involved, and the harm they do to wild animals, if we are ever going to get companies to change. If vegans and vegan companies don't even take a stand on avoiding palm oil who will?

Moose's Kitchen and LOVE Food were set up on the principles of cooking healthy, tasty food using Local, Organic, Vegan and Ethical ingredients, so I've decided to use this page to talk (....have a rant) about some of the problems I feel there are with processed foods and the mainstream industrial food system and veganism - first the jammie dodger!
