Please Share!! Please share!! Do tumble dryers really set on fire??? Sadly yes!! With recent news that Hotpoint and Whirlpool have had recalls on Tumble Dryers. How safe are they?? Well as an engineer with experience with all makes of dryers, I must say that excluding the recent recalls which were manufacturing faults, dryers are quite safe!! However, all too often it is misuse and bad practice that make all dryers a potential death trap!!! Some of the dryers I go out to have already got signs of potential fire or overheating issues. Bad ventilation?? . Dryers in cupboards or dryers with clothes and debris stacked on them is a big no no!! Dryers need air to work correctly. They suck in air which is then blown through a fan and over a heating element. Restrict this air flow and the element overheats!! simple. All dryers should be free from any obstruction and nothing should be placed on a dryer!! Fluff??? Always clean the fluff filters between cycles. Fluff restricts the air flow. It can then become dislodged and can be blown into the heater. Woooof!!! Overloading?? Again reduces air flow around the garments!! This then takes longer to dry and overheating takes place. Most dryers if not used properly are dangerous. Fluff can get inside the dryer cabinet if not cleaned as recommended. Condenser dryers need the condenser and pumps flushing out on a regular basis. this again causes overheating and poor performance.
