Our forebears Thomas and James of the Backhouse Nursery grew and won prizes for their beautiful ‘Guernsey lilies'. We believe the name came from the bulbs floating onto the island shores from a shipwrecked vessel and establishing themselves. See our Collection of Nerine and x Amerine cultivars on display in the former vinery. This display forms part of the work we are doing at the Backhouse Heritage and Education Centre which brings our forebears’ important horticultural heritage back to life for you to enjoy. We close on the 30th September – so do drop in before then or come to our next event, Apple Mania on the 14th and 15th of October….more details coming soon.
