HEL Performance | BTCC Our attention this weekend turns from two wheels to four as the BTCC Championship returns this weekend. Ash Sutton returns to defend his championship in the HEL veined Subaru and many more teams this year are running HEL Performance. The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship’s 60th anniversary campaign is set to spark into life next weekend (7/8 April) at Brands Hatch, with arguably the most decorated line-up in its history, as an unparalleled 17 race-winners, and five champions, prepare themselves to battle for the most coveted prize in British motorsport. A capacity grid, comprising 32 of the very best in touring car talent anywhere in the world will take to the track around the 1.2-mile Indy circuit in front of a packed crowd of passionate fans keen to catch a glimpse of the stars and their cars on the first outing in anger of 2018. The famous Kent venue played host to a nail-biting title showdown at the end of 2017 between the young pretender, Subaru’s Ashley Sutton and the experienced double-champion, BMW’s Colin Turkington. Sutton, then competing in just his second BTCC season, held his nerve to clinch the crown – adding his name to the record books to become a major part of the championship’s storied, 60-year history. Retaining the title is another proposition entirely, however, with competition truly more fierce than it has ever been before. For 2018, the BTCC will again comprise of 30 rounds across ten race weekends at nine different venues around the UK. As part of the championship’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, in addition to special events at the Silverstone Classic, Goodwood Festival of Speed and more, there will be a special one-off event at Snetterton (28/29 July) – the Diamond Double – a 60-mile, clean-slate race without success ballast and with double the championship points up for grabs. All of the action will be played out in front of an ever-increasing trackside audience numbering hundreds of thousands over the course of the season, with millions more watching live and free-to-air via the championship’s longstanding broadcast partners ITV. The action saw fantastic television viewing figures in 2017, with fans tuning in to ITV4, the ITV Hub and itv.com/btcc, as well as extensive highlights programmes to keep track of every detail between Round 1 and Round 30. Bring the noise. #DriveHEL #TeamHEL #StoppingTheUnstoppable

HEL Performance | British Super Bikes | Buildbase Suzuki The Buildbase Suzuki team was in dominant form at Donington Park for the opening round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, as Bradley Ray did the double on his GSX-R1000 superbike, while Billy McConnell also took a win in the National Superstock 1000 series. Inclement weather conditions played havoc with the schedule, and saw the first of the weekend’s two superbike races brought forward from Monday to Sunday. Despite the cold, the race took place in the dry, and saw Ray make a lightning start from his third row grid spot to slot into third place by Redgate. It wasn’t long until the youngster had assumed the race lead, pulling a healthy advantage at the front. He had to fend off a late charge from James Ellison and Shane Byrne, but held on to take his and the team’s first win of 2018. Ray started today’s race from pole and grabbed the holeshot, threading his way between the track’s wet patches on his GSX-R1000 as he ran away at the front, his lead at the end of lap one more than two seconds. From there he managed the gap and took his second win of the weekend to leave the Leicestershire circuit with the championship lead. Bradley Ray, “Yesterday’s win took a while to sink in to be honest, so to get another today is just unreal. The team have worked so hard over winter to improve the bike further, and we’ve really got a package we can use to fight for wins. After last season, the aim this year was to get closer to the front and try and consistently fight for the podium and hopefully some wins, so for not one but two to come right away is unbelievable. I felt like I could lead yesterday, and I wanted to be at the front. Shakey and Ellison closed up on the final lap but we kept it together. Today, I just wanted to lead again, get through the damp areas first, get into a rhythm and try and pull a gap. The pace picked up as the laps went by but I felt comfortable, could manage the gap, and could pick up another win. I must say ‘thank you’ to the team; the bike worked brilliantly. We’re not getting carried away but we’re going to Brands feeling confident.” The team also got off to a winning start in the National Superstock 1000 championship, as Billy McConnell – starting from pole position after setting a lap time over a second quicker than anyone else in qualifying – took the chequered flag first in part one of yesterday’s two-part race. The Aussie was then leading the way again in part two onboard his GSX-R1000 when the red flags came out, bringing the race to an early end. In today’s wet conditions he took a solid fifth place to add more points to his championship haul, and heads into round two at the top of the standings. Billy McConnell, “To be honest, after starting with essentially two wins, today’s fifth was a little disappointing. But after such a long time off a bike, for me, I started to have questions over whether I could do it again, so it was really nice for me to show that I could this weekend. In the dry race I had such a good rhythm, and once at the front I just managed the gap as there was a little bit of drizzle in each sector, sort of one sector at a time as it moved around. But honestly I felt so good, I’ve really gelled with the bike and it’s got so much potential too, and we’re just getting started. In qualifying we were over a second quicker than anyone else, and I really think we could have kept pushing on if it was fully dry. In the wet, I actually had too much traction control on to start with, but I lowered it and started to push and get more drive. I probably could have lowered it further. But fifth is good. It’s early in the season and we’ve started strongly. Everyone’s smiling and looking forward to Brands Hatch.” #RideHEL #TeamHEL
HEL Performance | British Super Bikes | Gearlink Kawasaki Dickies British Supersport The first round of the Dickies British Supersport season was always going to be an emotional rollercoaster for the Gearlink Kawasaki team after the sad passing of team-owner Norma de Bidaph. In the opening race on Saturday Ben Currie took a stunning win and backed that up on Easter Monday with his second win of the weekend. His team-mate James Westmoreland was fifth in race one and sixth in the main feature race. Ben was consistently at the top of the time sheets throughout the practice sessions and qualified in second place on the grid for the opening Sprint race on Saturday. His team-mate James Westmoreland ended up next to him on the front row in third. Ben gained a fantastic start and led the pack for several laps before Jack Kennedy came past him mid-race. Ben rode a very confident race and followed Jack for several laps before making a strong pass on Jack for the lead and he fought off the challenges from Kennedy taking the win by 0.2. James was fourth after the opening lap and was locked in a battle for a podium position for the majority of the race. He worked hard to secure a solid fifth place. For race two Ben started from pole with Westy behind him in fourth place. The track conditions were drying but it still was not dry enough for dry tyres so choosing the right tyre was vital. Ben got an incredible start and had a 5.5 second lead after lap one. After that Ben just continued to extend his lead, eventually taking his second win of the weekend by a massive 24.3 seconds. Westy had a strong start and was up to fourth but lost a couple of places by the end of the 16-lap race to finish in sixth. Ben Currie - "I'm really happy to start the 2018 campaign with a win; it was a fitting time to do it with the tribute to Norma, post and pre-race. The race went 100% to plan, I followed Jack to see where he was stronger in the dry and I learnt from him also and was able to make the pass for the win. The team have worked really hard to ensure the bike was perfect and it was great result and was well deserved. To back up the first race win with a second one is just brilliant. I couldn't have asked for more. It was a big gamble with the tyres and I went with full wets, I knew I had to go hard from lap one just in case the track dried out a lot. I had to try and stay focused as I knew I had a massive lead and sometimes that is more difficult than being locked in a battle with someone. I could not be happier, two wins for Norma, this season is all for her, I'm sure she was watching me today and pushing me on. James Westmoreland - "Race one we took a gamble at the start with the conditions as it was declared a wet race which boxed us into a bit of a corner. We had dry tyres and a wet suspension setting which is never ideal. The podium was there for the taking but I'm happy to start the season in fifth. I've still not had much time on the bike and it was difficult this weekend with the variable weather conditions. It is a long season and I know there is much more to come. Race two wasn't where I'd have liked to have been. I want to be in contention to win the Championship and not finish in fifth and sixth. The weather hasn't helped with track time and we had a few niggling problems. I know I'm capable of more and I want to go to Brands to win both races, it's a long season and I want to be fighting for the title. I'll be pushing hard at Brands to rectify the results here and looking forward to moving upwards." MCE British Superbike Carl Phillips is new to the Bennetts British Supersport Championship this season and the team have worked hard throughout the changing weather conditions to help him push further forwards. He qualified for race one in 24th place and finished the opening 18-lap race in 24th place. For race two he started from 26th place and was forced to pull in after making the wrong tyre choice. Carl Phillips - "We made steady progress this weekend. I managed to hold my position in race one and I am still getting used to the bike and the team. It is a long season and we have a lot to learn. Donington was more of a testing weekend for us and hopefully we can continue to make progress at Brands. It was good to get my first weekend on a Superbike done and I am looking forward to the rest of the season." Team Manager Michael de Bidaph - "This weekend has been ten times harder than I imagined it would be. Especially as it is the first time that I have been to a race meeting without my darling Norma. The decision to carry on was a hard one to make but I know that it is exactly what Norma would have wanted me to do and I know that she will always be with me. All the riders have done an excellent job in terrible conditions. For Ben to secure the double race win this weekend is the perfect tribute to Norma. He has been consistent and fast in every session. When he crossed the line on Sunday I just broke down in tears, I was full of mixed emotions, happiness and sadness. I think Ben surprised everyone in the second race, even himself, no one could touch him and he was in a league of his own. I'm so grateful to Ben for the two wins this weekend, they were very special. Westy has not had much time on the bike and he is still adjusting to riding the 600 machine again after his time on the Superbike. The conditions were not ideal to get more laps in; he stayed in one piece and secured two solid results. I know, and he knows, there is more to come and I'm very sure the results he wants are not far away. I am impressed with Carl and how well he has settled into the team and on to the Superbike. He has not had many rides on the bike and we used this weekend to collect as much data as possible to help him move forwards for the rest of the season. We knew it would be tough but we will keep chipping away at it. I must end by saying a really huge thank you to the BSB Paddock for their support, kind words and encouragement this weekend. I must also thank Eurosport for their beautiful tribute on Norma, which was very special for me." Pictures by Burnout Media #RideHEL #TeamHEL
