The Secret Sanctuary
Description
Set within the beautiful area of the Chilterns, is a stunning landscaped retreat boasting waterfalls, lakes and ponds, woodland walks and vibrant planting. The name Secret Sanctuary is wholly justified due to the fact it is a haven to many species of butterflies, birds and beasties complemented with ponds and lakes flourishing with wildlife. This in itself makes it an exciting visit, but there is more!
Within the grounds we have a snake retreat which is home to many rare and captivating snakes, some of which we have already managed to breed successfully. Once you have learnt about our snakes, you will have an up close encounter with them – those who are brave enough of course!
Once this session is over, you can walk next door to the lizards, some of which are extraordinary and highly intelligent. Several of our lizards are very hard to source, which adds great interest to the collection. Examine their colours, textures and behaviour in a natural environment. See our cute little babies and much larger members of the family!!!
Wander through our large greenhouse in a tropical climate which homes our magnificent iguanas who often roam freely. They have previously had 20 babies, so are more than happy in their environment. Recently, they have made a new friend, a 60 year old tortoise who is their room mate! The greenhouse is also home to many abandoned turtles who have been brought to the sanctuary for some tender loving care.
The Sanctuary offers a unique experience all year round, as there is always so much to see and learn. Many of the animals breed during the winter months, which is not only educational, but very exciting. There are many sheltered areas around the retreat so weather does not deter us! The snake and lizard rooms make us forget about the winter chill outside. Of course, there is also the option of the cosy cabin where a warm cup of tea or coffee awaits!!!
Our huge lake is thriving with an abundance of koi and grass carp, along with many adventurous turtles. Weather and season permitting, you can feed the fish and see their amazing colours and textures. During the warmer seasons, you can marvel at the swallow display, wild ducks and ducklings, who make it their home year after year.
For those who are more into their furry friends we are fosterers for Cats Protection and look after cats and kittens that have been abandoned, mistreated or lost and need a loving home. A majority of these cats are eager for fuss and attention, so we are confident it will be an eye opening, yet rewarding experience.
Anyone who wants to get their hands dirty, you can spend time potting up seeds, or alternatively go on a beastie hunt!
Those budding gardeners in the group can identify the array of plants and shrubs set within the tranquil surroundings. Why not take some time out and chill, capturing the beauty of the sanctuary. For the keen artists, it might be a great opportunity to put it on paper. During the spring months, you can see the amazing display of bulbs which enhances the overall landscape.
