Sunday 4, 4.00pm West Side Story — Duns Film Club One of the greatest musicals of all time, West Side Story is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet with the feuding families replaced by rival street gangs: the all-white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks, each battling for territory in the harsh streets of New York’s upper west side. When Tony, a Jet, falls in love with Maria, the sister of a Shark, there seems no refuge where the two lovers can find happiness. As tensions explode, Shakespeare’s swordfights become switchblades and a rumble … until finally only tragedy can end the fighting. Classic performances by Natalie Wood and others showcase the innocence of first love, fused with the power and passion of Jerome Robbins’ urban dance sequences — all set to Leonard Bernstein’s electrifying, iconic score. As fresh and energetic today as when it first came out, West Side Story is unmissable. Prepare to have your heart wrenched, and please try not to sing along (at least out loud). Run time 153 minutes. Non-members welcome; tickets £6.
