facebook.comThe current Citroen Berlingo was introduced in 2008 as a much improved and more useful version of the massively popular French van. It didn't quite replace the original, which soldiered on renamed as the Berlingo First, but this newer version is a big step forward in quality and refinement making it a dependable choice. Citroen offers the Berlingo van in two sizes, standard L1 and stretched L2 versions that share the same wheelbase and offer owners further scope to tailor the van to their needs. Both platforms are based on the Citroen C4 of the same age, giving this van a comfortable ride on bumpy roads. Other features that have made the Berlingo popular include Citroen’s Ready to Run range that offers factory-fitted options such as refrigeration and carrying racks. Add in other extras such as a third passenger seat and roof opening flap to accommodate longer items such as ladders or poles and the Berlingo is as versatile as it gets in this class. Engine choice is kept simple with a straight division between 1.6-litre petrol and diesel motors. The 95PS petrol will suit those using the van for short hop deliveries or town work, while the diesel is offered in 75PS and 90PS versions that deliver up to 55.4mpg average economy and emissions as low as 133g/km. There is also a low emissions Airdream model with CO2 of 125g/km. The Citroen Berlingo offers plenty of choice and good versatility, too, while the most recent version is proving reliable, which is good for any business user who’ll come to rely on it.

Backbone of Britain. That was the previous Transit's claim to fame and one that was very true. It's nigh on impossible to complete any journey without seeing a Transit van and it continues to prove by far the most popular van choice - in fact it's Ford's third best selling model in the UK after the Fiesta and Focus. So a new model is always going to make big waves. And this new Transit does just that. For starters Ford has split the range so that the smaller one-tonne model is now called Transit Custom with the traditional Transit name reserved for the larger two-tonne models. Compared to its predecessor this Transit is now far more refined and comfortable, plus it's better to drive helped by a new stiffer platform. The interior is a huge step forward with a car-like layout and impressive comfort. The quality has markedly improved and it's now good enough to match the likes of the latest Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. It's functional too with good storage and plenty of space for both driver and passengers. Power comes from a 2.2-litre TDCi diesel engine with three outputs, 100PS, 125PS and 155PS, all linked to a positive shifting six-speed transmission as standard. Front, rear and all-wheel drive variants are available. The engine is powerful with plenty of torque yet it's impressively refined with little noise while better sound insulation makes the Transit very quiet on the motorway. Economy is better too with the best Econetic models averaging a claimed 44.1mpg. In 2017 Ford replaced the 2.2 TDCi with the EcoBlue diesel engine and added a six-speed automatic gearbox to the range for the first time. Power outputs were also increased to 105PS, 130PS and 170PS. There are a huge number of model variants - 450 in total - with three different lengths and two different roof heights. The side load doors are now wider while more vertical body sides make the load area more usable plus all panel vans come with an integrated high-grip rear bumper step too. The biggest Transit Jumbo can carry a maximum of 15.1m3 although rivals like the Volkswagen Crafter can carry more. Alongside the panel van there are double cab-in-van version, chassis cabs and the minibus range. Ford has succeeded in improving the Transit in all the key areas making it an even better van. Yet its not lost touch with the key features that have made its predecessors so popular. It's still practical, functional and robust but now has impressive refinement and a higher quality feel.

The current Dispatch is a much bigger van than its predecessor, which puts it into competition with the likes of the Renault Trafic and Volkswagen Transporter. Like these rivals, the Peugeot is versatile and as well as the standard panel van it comes as a crew van and a minibus. It's one of the most rounded vans on the market and it was facelifted in late 2011 with further improvements. It continues to prove popular helped by the fact it's available in two different wheelbase lengths and with a choice of two roof heights. Sharing its basic shape and underpinnings with the Fiat Scudo and Peugeot Expert, the Citroen aims to appeal to buyers with standard kit that includes Smartnav satellite navigation and vehicle tracking. The Enterprise model comes with air conditioning, Bluetooth connection and USB connection for an MP3 player. While the cargo space in the Dispatch is good and generous, the front cabin is not so ample for its two passengers, which is one of the few disappointments with this van. However, its versatility still makes it good choice for those wanting a good value and reliable all-rounder
