WHAT ARE ‘SHIN-SPLINTS’? 🤔 Over the years I’ve heard others give a variety of answers to this question from, microscopic cracks in the Tibia (shinbone), to growing pains! The simple answer is, Shin-Splints are inflammation induced pain in the lower/anterior part of the leg..... Now, what does that actually mean?? 🤦🏻‍♂️ The lower leg is made up from numerous muscles, designed to support the function of the ankle and foot. These muscles sometimes get tight or damaged, which results in a build up of inflammation, usually along the origin or insertion points of the muscles along the shinbone and cause pain during certain movements and exercises! 😩 Although Shin-Splints are usually felt along the medial boarder of the Tibia, the affecting soft tissue structures can often be the Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles (Calves) and Achilles’ tendon - muscles at the back of the lower leg! Typically the Flexor Digitorium Longus and Tibialis Anterior will also become sore too, but usually as an effect, not root cause. How Do We Get Shin-Splints? The following are generic ways we can suffer from Shin-Splints; • running/ jumping on hard or uneven surfaces • increases/ changes to training regime • poor or inappropriate footwear • tight Calf muscles/ Achilles’ tendon • flat feet • Ankle weakness/ injury • over weight Treating Shin-Splints Yourself; • Rest - Ice - Compress • purchase better footwear • foam rollers • run on softer surfaces (tacks or grass) • alternate high impact and low impact exercises • pain relief medication (limited usage). Check out this great video from Spine Health, which illustrates spinal disc herniations throughout different levels of the spine and describes their affects.
