Good variety of displays. Very informative. Would recommend to all." Angela B, Lancashire, visited October 2016.

The famous and beautiful gold lozenge, belt hook, and large copper dagger with minute gold studs in the pommel, dating to 1900-1700 BC, from the Bush Barrow near Stonehenge. First discovered in 1808 by William Cunnington and Sir Richard Colt Hoare whilst digging the barrow. The objects suggest the person buried under the barrow could have been a chieftain, or someone of high status. #wiltshire #archaeology #prehistoric #bronzeage #gold #jewelry #dagger #highstatus #stonehenge #museum #shiny @wiltshiremuseum

Lovely lovely Palaeolithic hand axes/monkey rocks! Approximately 200 thousand years old.👌#archaeology #wiltshire #devizes #ancient #flint #axe #lovely #museum #stonetools #lovethisplace @wiltshiremuseum
These are the grave goods of a what have must haven been a very important woman in the Bronze Age. She was buried with gold and amber pendants, some of which came from Central Europe. She was also buried with a small fragment of skull encased in a sheet of gold, but analysis could not confirm whether it was a piece of human or sheep skull. @wiltshiremuseum #devizes #archaeology #museum #prehistoric #gold #ancient #amber #bone #wiltshire #shiney #bronzeage #jewelry
This is a lovely Peterborough ware bowl dating to the early/middle Neolithic, found at the West Kennet Long Barrow. The pots were decorated using wood or bone tools, and whipped cord impressed onto the clay before firing. @wiltshiremuseum #devizes #archaeology #wiltshire #ancient #neolithic #prehistoric #prehistory #pottery #ceramics #beautiful #museum #iwanttofindone
Yeah, I’m back at my favourite place again. This is the Roundway Archer burial. A Bronze Age beaker burial with some lovely grave goods. An almost pure copper dagger from the continent, a polished jade arm bracer, possibly from Spain, a copper pin, barbed flint arrowhead and the highly decorated beaker. 👌#devizes #wiltshire #archaeology #ancient #bronzeage #burial #museum #exhibition #prehistoric #prehistory #lovethis #gorgeous #pottery @wiltshiremuseum
Stumbled across the Wiltshire Museum today and an exhibition of “WW1 propaganda posters”. They are touring Europe from the US and this is the only place in the UK to host them. Utterly fascinating to see how America tried to encourage people to get behind the war effort in 1917 after years of neutrality. In the absence of TV, newspapers and social media this was how they did it. I’ve only seen the iconic English Kitchener poster before and had no idea there was an American version and that there were so many others. Including this one.
This is the Wiltshire Museum, housing Britain’s best Bronze Age collection, including gold objects from the era of Stonehenge. It is one of my favourite places, and a must see. It’s a mixture of Georgian and Victorian buildings, and has been a museum since 1874. I’ve been helping to run the Wiltshire Archaeology Field Group from here since 2008. #devizes #wiltshire #museum #archaeology #history #localhistory #georgian #victorian #stonehenge #prehistoric #architecture #favourite #mustsee
