In view of the recent attention the club has received on social media we feel that a response is in order to explain our current position. There was a lot of historical emotional venting taking place and if it helps heal then it must happen. However 10 years is a long time, the club is still recovering from those days and those currently doing the job are working very hard to make it happen albeit going back to our roots and rebuilding. I was at the club when it was built 29 years ago and yes we had 5 teams out, 60 turning up for training, fitness sessions with Bill Walker and training in the dark until 9:30 with Mike Lovett because as he said training didn't stop until he said and finally waiting for the post to arrive to see what team you had been selected for. Good times however the face of Rugby has changed and we must all change with it like it or not. For us not to put a side out today was devastating for all concerned, it was due to lack of front row through injury which started on the Tuesday. I received a call from the team manager saying we had 6 of our front row players carrying injuries and could be in trouble fielding a side on Saturday. At that time we advised all concerned parties of our position, I contacted our oppositions Chairman and advised him of our situation and our playing staff contacted the league secretary, Essex Rugby and the RFU with a promise of keeping them all updated on the situation. The final decision was made on Thursday evening before training whereby our opposition offered to loan us 2 front row players for the game. This was put to the playering and coaching staff and after a lot of soul searching if was felt best, bearing in mind we have already technically lost the game it would not be in the best interests of the players to take them away and risk further injuries. All parties were informed supportive conversations were had, we cancelled our travel arrangement for the day and went home with a heavy heart. Unfortunately having only one senior side there is and will be a potential for this to happen, our player base is to small !! The Club itself is in the best position for years, the people that are ' doing ' care about the club and there is a harmony there from the youth up. We have a good relationship with Lawrence Pontin the youth chair and Max Oram who is working tirelessly to make things happen. There are some great events taking place in the coming weeks starting with a Halloween night on Tuesday, we then have a fire work night, a guest speaker evening with Billy Bonds and Alvin Martin and then the deaf Rugby international on Sunday 12th Nov between England and New Zealand. All events being fully supported by volunteers from all sections of the club. Ravens are still supporting the club as they have always done since coming here and the May & Baker football team has proved a great success. With all this said we do have a problem, we are a Rugby club with an insufficient player base. If people want to help, this is the area to tackle. I will not go into how hard it is to attract new players without paying wages coupled with our results over the past few years. With the loss of all that could under pin this area due to whatever reason and the natural time it takes to bring the youth to the fore is our main issue. If there are those who truly have Barking at their heart and can live in the present and not the past who can help in any way in bringing players to the club please do so. We need to play rugby at Barking Rugby club, please contact me anytime with any idea's or support you can offer. Dave Lancaster Barking RUFC
