Maxwell Court dates from 1700,it was acquired by John Miller, Distiller, passed to his niece Eliza Pirrie then to her son JM Andrews Prime Minister In origin Maxwell Court may date from the mid to later 18th century. It was probably built by a family named Wilson, possibly David Wilson who later became a merchant and ship owner in Belfast, and who gave his name to Wilson’s Court in that city. The house is noted in Pigot’s Directory’ of 1824 under the name ‘Maxwell Court’, the property of Mr. William Wilson-Maxwell, who may have given it the name. By 1835 the house passed to a James Kearns (sometimes written as Cairns), who lived there until at least 1846. By 1856 it was home to a James Anderson but by 1863 was apparently vacant, with ownership in the hands of ‘the representatives of George Crea’. The property seems to have been devoid of a permanent resident until acquired by John Miller a Director of Comber Distillery and his wife Agnes (nee Pirrie) who left it and the farmland to Agnes’ neice Mrs Eliza Andrews(nee Pirrie), John Miller Andrews her son lived in it from 1902 and his wife Jessie was instrumental in many Edwardian alterations and particularly the bay windows. JM Andrews served as Minister of Labour and then Finance 1921-40 and was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland between 1940-43 and whose great grandson Johnny Andrews now resides in the house.
