THE 5 ELEMENTS: The Japanese five elements theory refers to the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The theory asserts substances can be divided into one of five basic elements: wood, fire, water, metal and earth, of which each contain their own specific characteristics and properties. These elements correspond to different aspects of the natural world and the body. Wood, for example, corresponds to spring and wind in the natural world and to the liver, gall bladder, eyes and tendons in the body. Each element is related to a specific bodily system and pair of internal organs, a yin and a yang organ. Dis-ease is due to imbalances in these sets of five: elements, organs, seasons, etc. If one component is overbearing and excessive, the system is out of balance, and another component becomes weak and debilitated.
