Canvey Island Transport Museum
Description
Open for visitors from 10.00am to 5.00pm on the FIRST and THIRD Sundays of each month between April and October and every Sunday in August The Canvey Island Transport Museum is operated by the Castle Point Transport Museum Society, which is a Registered Charity.
The building that houses the Museum was built in 1934 for the Canvey & District Motor Transport Co. Ltd. and served a series of similar companies before passing to the Eastern National Omnibus Co. Ltd, which used it until 1978.
A group from the Eastern National Preservation Group then formed the Castle Point Transport Museum Society and acquired the leasehold of the depot, later purchasing the freehold.
Since then, the Museum has assembled a collection of over thirty preserved commercial vehicles as its main display, many privately owned by members and several owned by the Society.
Visitors can see classic examples from the vanishing worlds of chassis makers like AEC, Bedford, Bristol, Guy, and Leyland, and body builders including Eastern Coach Works, Duple, Harrington and Massey Brothers.
Many vehicles are fully restored, while others are being rebuilt or undergoing maintenance by their owners or groups of members in our workshops

A HUGE 'Thank You' to everyone who has followed us, visited us and supported us during 2017. We send Festive Greetings to everyone and hope you all have a peaceful and love-filled Christmas! See you in 2018!
We were delighted to feature in the local BBC Children in Need initiative this year - take a look at this great short film (courtesy BBC Essex, the Essex Quest: Live on Stage and BBC Children in Need).
Crikey - it's Front End Friday again! We couldn't resist sharing this photo by member Callum Taylor of our oldest bus and Museum icon, Southend Corporation 244 (FOP 429), running and outside the building for a wash a few weeks back. Work is underway to return her to the road for “occasional” use. A new starter motor is fitted and the brake cylinders are being refurbished so this well-loved 72-year old can represent the Museum again in the public eye in the near future.
The Museum is now closed until next April when we will open our doors to visitors again on selected Sundays, and we'll keep you updated on events as they are organised and dates are set. A big Thank You to everyone who came to visit us on our Open Sundays, our Annual Transport Show and our Model Railway Show in 2017. Keep following us for Facebook updates through the closed season and we look forward to welcoming you again next year!
Front End Friday! We LOVE the "From the Archives" postings from our friends at the Essex Bus Enthusiasts Group, and this one is a particularly joyous image featuring a "Queen Mary" Bristol/ECW L coach identical to one of our most treasured Museum residents, Craig Mara's wonderful and painstakingly restored PTW 110.
Thanks to the Echo for this write-up!
The blue sky says it all - what a lovely day we had for our 2017 Annual Transport Show. We'd LOVE to see your pictures from the event, if you'll share them with us! And once again, many THANKS to all of the vehicle owners, stall holders, volunteer helpers, Museum members and local residents of Canvey for all your support - not forgetting the members of the public who came along to see it all on the day!
We want to say a HUGE Thank You to everyone who supported our Annual Transport Show today on Canvey Island. The show is a massive logistical challenge for our small team of volunteer members but our numbers are boosted by other fantastic volunteers from various groups on the Island, and we are always really pleased to see how many people put so much effort into bringing their classic buses, cars and other vehicles to the event too. We thank all of the members of the Public who come through the doors and ride on some great buses, old and new - And we thank the Stall Holders like EBEG (whose post I am sharing) who bring so much great merchandise along. Finally, an even more massive vote of thanks to the residents of the Island, our valued neighbours, the Canvey Football Club and the traders who feed and water us all day. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
