Dilan Rajakaruna: gathering to pay respects There will be an opportunity to gather together this Friday (8th December) at 16.00 in the Pavilion Room to share memories and pay our respects to MPhil student Dilan Rajakaruna, who sadly passed away last week after a long illness. Dilan touched many of us during the few months he spent in college, and some brief tributes are posted on the website: www.hughes.cam.ac.uk/dilan-rajakaruna/. This gathering is for anyone who knew Dilan, whether staff or fellow students, from within college or beyond. His partner and family may also attend. Please feel welcome to attend, whatever the nature of your acquaintance or friendship with him, and feel free to contribute or to honour his memory simply by your presence.

"Football, to me, is more than just a game. It represents a way of escaping every day’s routine for 90 minutes. Everything started about 6 years ago when I went to the stadium for the first time to watch a football match. It was love at first sight; the atmosphere and the supporters were so passionate that I decided to become a supporter myself and bought a seasonal ticket for the following season. Watching football can be very exciting, playing even more so. So, when I arrived at Hughes, I decided to join the college football team. I really enjoyed the friendly environment and the time spent together. Now, I am honoured to be the captain of the team and since I joined I have managed to dedicate twice the time to football: 90 minutes playing with Hughes Hall and 90 minutes watching my favourite team games." Our novice men and women have had really promising performances at this year’s Fairbairn Novice Races, that bode well for the Bumps and other races next term. The novice men crew finished 15th out of 55 with the women finishing 15th out of 45. Both crews rowed very well and we look forward to future races with great optimism.

Last week the Hughes Hall Postdoctoral Research Group hosted another great Research Showcase. On this occasion we heard from Research Fellow Sonia Ilie on ‘behavioural nudging to increase higher education applications’ and Research Associate Kyren Lazarus on his research into ‘finding new drugs for patients with lung squamous cancers’. For the first time at a research showcase we also heard from a PhD student. Andrea Di Antonio (PhD Chemistry) presented his research on ‘developing a low-cost methodology for aerosol measurements’. Research Convenor Fernando Gonzalez Zalba commented: ‘In this new format of the Research Showcases, we hope to have a more integrated conversation between the different levels of College research. It was great to hear from Sonia, Kyren and Andrea and I invite all College members to support future research showcases – whether it be presenting or attending.’

“When preparing my application for undergraduate degrees, I was sure I couldn’t speak Spanish well enough and so opted for French instead. Little did I know that five years later I would be here, working towards an MPhil in Latin American studies. I was also unaware that I would live in Colombia and Argentina as part of my studies, each for six months, and be exposed to some of the most wonderful and welcoming people and cultures in the world. I don’t know where I will be heading after this, but I do know that life has a funny way of taking you further than you ever could have imagined.” Meet Juliette Robinson, MPhil Latin American Studies #HumansofHughesHall #latinamericanstudies #student #studentatcambridge #application #goingtocambridge #cambridgeuniversity #cambridge #cambridgecollege #HughesHall
