We think this poor chap's swelling will improve now we've removed the fragment of thorn from his chest! It's amazing how quickly these sorts of foreign bodies can work their way into the deeper tissues such as muscle and cause severe pain and swelling #equinevet #emergencyvet #springpaddocksequine #keepingusbusy

QUIZ ANSWER! Well done everyone who had a guess at yesterday's quiz! A) The blood sample on the left of the image is normal, the one on the right is abnormal B) The condition identifiable is HYPERLIPAEMIA - a build up of fat in the blood which can be seen in the photo by the cloudiness of the serum (top portion) of the right hand sample. The sample is also 'pinker' because the red blood cells have leaked into the serum. C) Hyperlipaemia occurs most commonly in small ponies and donkeys and is triggered when the animal stops eating for a separate reason (eg they are ill from an infection / have severe laminitis etc). If the pony or donkey is carrying significant fat reserves, the body responds to this sudden drop in energy intake by mobilising it's own fat stores. This is actually counter-productive as the fat builds up in the bloodstream and can cause kidney and liver failure if not treated immediately and is often fatal. Pictured is 'Darcy' who was admitted to Spring Paddocks Equine Ltd 2 weeks ago with severe, life-threatening hyperlipaemia. He has had intensive care and treatment since and is now doing well. We will all miss him when he goes home on Monday as he does like to pop in the Office every now and again for a quick pat!

What is Intravenous Regional Perfusion (IVRP)? IVRP is often used in cases where drugs need to be concentrated in a certain area of the body- in this case antibiotics around the fetlock following a deep, infected wound which required surgery under general anaesthesia here at Spring Paddocks Equine. The compression bandage higher up the limb aims to restrict the amount of dispersion of the drug via the blood stream and was removed after 30 minutes #equinevet #equineclinic #springpaddocksequine
