Dear Member Annual Dinner – Friday 6th April 2018 Venue: Barton Village Hall Cost: £30 per person. The quest speaker is Devon Malcolm Devon Malcolm is remembered as probably the quickest England bowler of the last thirty years, and on his day as quick as anyone in the world. He spent the majority of his 20 year county career with Derbyshire, before moving on to Northamptonshire, and finally Leicestershire. All told he claimed more than one thousand first class scalps, and nearly 250 List A victims too. Good enough to earn 40 Test caps he took 128 wickets, and will be best remembered for destroying the South African innings at The Oval in 1994, when his 9 for 57 in their second innings helped England to victory. His figures that day are the third best of any England bowler in the 20th century, the fourth best by any England bowler at any time, and the eighth best in all Test cricket. For more details and a booking form contact Dave Jepson via email at jeppo149@talktalk.net Yours sincerely, Dave Jepson Chairman

Our next meeting is Wednesday 15th November (8.00pm) and sees a change to the published speaker programme. David Millns is unavailable having been called to a meeting Lords so our own Mark Rowe, originally scheduled for the March meeting, will take his place. His subject matter will be "Brian Sellers - Yorkshire Tyrant". Sellers led Yorkshire to six County Championships in eight seasons before the war, before taking over as Chairman of the County Club on his retirement until 1970. He played a pivotal role in the sacking of Brian Close as Yorkshire captain and his replacement by Geoff Boycott. David Millns has agreed to replace Mark in March. The November meeting will be preceded by the AGM from 7.30. Dave Jepson Chairman

Former England Test cricketer Derek Randall was the special guest at the first NCLS meeting on Wednesday 18th October held at Holland Social Club, Barton under Needwood. Derek spent more than two hours regaling the members with stories of his time as a cricketer with England and Nottinghamshire and was open with his views on the modern game. The evening was sponsored by Brian Mole Independent Financial Advisors, of Bridge Street, Burton to whom we are extremely grateful. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 15th November (7.30pm) at HSC, when the former Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and England 'A' fast bowler, and now international umpire, David Millns will be the guest. Derek (below left) with sponsors Kevin and Nigel of Brian Mole IFA, and Dave Jepson, Chairman NCLS.

September 2017 Dear Member, As the cricket season begins to draw to a close it is time to look forward to our winter entertainment and the 29th season of the Needwood Cricket Lovers Society. The Committee has been working hard on your behalf to provide a varied and interesting selection of speakers, and has once again committed a substantial sum of the society’s reserves to cover our speaker’s costs. Consequently, I am very pleased to announce that the forthcoming programme is possibly the strongest of any year. As you will see below, the season includes two England cricketers and an international umpire - who also came close to playing for England - and possibly the tallest ever First Class wicketkeeper. The Programme for NCLS in the coming season is thus:- 18th October – Derek Randall (Nottinghamshire and England) includes buffet Start 7.30pm 15th November – David Millns (Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, International umpire) includes AGM Start 7.30pm 13th December – Phillip DeFreitas (Leicestershire, Lancashire, Derbyshire and England) includes buffet Start 7.30pm 17th January – Adrian Rollins (Derbyshire, Northamptonshire) Start 8.00pm 14th February – Ian Morgan (Derbyshire Chairman) Start 8.00pm 14th March – TBC Start 8.00pm 6th April (Friday) - Dinner with TBC Start 7.00pm for 7.30pm Meetings will be at Holland Sports Club, Efflinch Lane, Barton under Needwood, DE13 8ET, the exception being the dinner, which will be held at the Village Hall, Barton Under Needwood. Additionally, the Committee has also agreed the following: - A retention of the second buffet evening, and - The dinner price being held at £25.00 per person; After many years, the Committee has also decided that a small increase in the annual subscriptions is due. From this winter the fees will be: Full Member £16.00 Concessions £12.00 Couple £22.00 Visitor £ 5.00 However, we do not expect an increase to be made on an annual basis! Could I urge all members to renew their membership as early as possible please and certainly by the December meeting? Not only does this help our cashflow, but it will also ensure our records are as up to date as possible. Please use the form below and send it to Alistair as suggested. PLEASE ENSURE ALL CHEQUES ARE MADE OUT TO Needwood Cricket Lovers Society (our bank will not accept “NCLS”). As ever, we are always on the lookout for new members, so please let your friends and family know of the exciting winter season ahead. The more members we have, the larger our revenue, and the higher the profile of the speakers we can attract. The committee has remained unchanged this year. The members are: Chairman – Dave Jepson Treasurer – Alistair Heyward Speaker Secretaries – Dave Jepson and Richard Beresford Social – Peter Allen and Bill Evans Secretary – Martin Astle Their contribution has been invaluable over the summer months. I very much look forward to seeing you at our October meeting, and in the subsequent winter months. Regards, Martin Astle Secretary
