Course news. With no significant rainfall for over 2 weeks the irrigation has been on constantly for the same time watering parts of the course requiring water. Tees, aprons and greens have all been done but main focus has been the putting surfaces and wetting agents have also been applied. Poa plants on the greens are suffering from drought stress while the bentgrasses are happy so getting the happy medium of watering the poa to relieve the stress ans not causing a "fat" leaf on the native bents is near impossible as they take in water and nutrients that are available causing soft growth and slower greens due to this fact... catch 22 sometimes!! Verti - cutting has taken place this week on the greens to a depth of 2mm which is just catching that lateral growth and picking up some organic matter that is accumulating in the top surface. Next week will see another verticut before we lower the depth to -4mm but I feel its not necessary to go that low below the crown of the plant and as the Poa Annua grasses are stressed due to the drought conditions, I don't want to add to their plight by slashing them to bits and causing more stress which would set our greens back unnecessarily in my view. New maintenance centre is very near complete and today sees the decorators in painting the staff accommodation areas. Focus has now shifted to the old part and as you can see with the photo the old brickwork is being removed in preparation for phase 2. Monday 22nd may sees the greenstaff solid tine the greens with a 12mm tine to a 5" depth. The plan is to do 6 each morning of the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so we cause no disruption to any play whatsoever. I have left a sample of the tine in the pro shop so anyone can see exactly the size of the hole that is made and I'm sure you'll agree that its really no issue in terms of surfaces and allows us to continue increasing air flow within our top surfaces and also allows for water to penetrate better.
