After a lovely morning spent with new clients, I'm making the most of this glorious sunshine by spending the afternoon training my own dogs. Lots of direction control, impulse control and engagement on scentwork.

Practising loose lead walking - with no lead!

Can your dog walk on a loose lead...without the lead? I'm not suggesting you run out and abandon your leads (safety first!) but it is a great way of honing the cues and rewards you give your dog because you aren't relying on the lead to stop your dog moving out of position. Try this at home in your garden away from distraction and build up the strength of the behaviour before trying elsewhere. https://youtu.be/Ee2q_eVq0N0

Building your dog's core strength using "sit pretty"

Building core strength - training #happyhealthydogs. You've probably heard of core strength training in humans but did you know it's important for your dog too? Running, twisting, turning jumping and sharp changes of direction all risk damaging poorly conditioned muscles and ligaments. "Sit pretty" or "beg" is one of the positions which can be used to build core strength and protect against injury. This is a position that takes a lot of incremental training as the muscles strengthen, so don't expect your dog to be able to do this within a couple of weeks of starting, but it is more than worthwhile. Watch a (very) condensed video of the training stages you need to go through to teach this position. https://youtu.be/xVjl5EpPbwY

Giving medications to dogs: Part 2

In the first video I shared on giving oral medications, I demonstrated a quick tip for delivering a tablet with some treats. Sometimes though, you need to deliver medication straight into the mouth, because of the type of tablet, a strong taste or a dog which is very good at spitting out tablets! While you could hold your dog down and force the medication into her mouth, do you really want to teach your dog that she is powerless over her body? That might work if you have a small, compliant dog but if you have a strong, wriggly dog, force will not work. In this video, I demonstrate the steps needed to train your dog to accept oral medications placed into the back of the mouth. Practice this as often as possible so that when it comes to delivering a tablet, your dog already thinks this is a great game and won't bat an eye! #happyhealthydogs #fearfree https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7vf2AILHts
