Anstruther Lifeboat was paged at 15.10pm yesterday afternoon, just a couple of hours after concluding our planned exercise, to assist a small yacht stuck on the rocks just off the coast of Cellardyke. Our ILB arrived on scene within minutes to find the 2 persons from boat standing on the rocks alongside another person offering assistance. Our crew member George joined them on the rocks in the first instance to ensure they were all okay which was gladly the case. Our second crew member Kevin entered the water to assess the boats predicament whilst our helm Barry remained with the ILB. Our all-weather lifeboat stood by to offer assistance should it have been required whilst our ILB crew push the boat until back afloat and free from the rocks. Once free, an astern tow line was attached and the vessel was returned to the safety of Cellardyke Harbour. ILB helmsman today was Barry Gourlay and Barry commented 'We arrived on scene promptly to find the two individuals well prepared with life jackets and a hand help VHF radio which is what we at the RNLI recommend as the minimum equipment that should feature with all seafarers. In this instance the individuals were extremely unlucky to encounter engine difficulty when exiting the harbour which resulted in them finding themselves on the rocks. Acting swiftly when arriving on scene, my experienced crew of George and Kevin split up to assess both the yacht and the guys on the rocks before freeing the boat and getting it under tow quickly. Their swift actions allowed us to get in and out of the shallow water and conclude the shout quick and safely. I would like to commend the preparation of the individuals in having the appropriate life jackets and radio to raise the alarm and unfortunately in this instance it was bad luck that resulted in their situation yesterday'. Anstruther Lifeboat was paged this afternoon at 15.11pm to assist five persons on the coastal chain walk by Elie. Our ILB arrived on scene followed by our all-weather lifeboat to find two police officers assisting three casualties at the top end of the cliff whilst two other casualties remained further down. It was decided by the coastguard shore team to request the assistance of Search and Rescue helicopter from Prestwick. Both lifeboats stood by awaiting the arrival of the helicopter. The helicopter arrived on scene and lifted two casualties and two police officers from the cliff to the safety at the top. Contrary to other media reports, no casualties required any medical attention. Senior Helmsman in charge of our ILB today was Barry Gourlay and Barry commented, 'This was a safely executed rescue incorporating the professional and swift actions of three emergency services. This area of the chain walk is particularly hazardous due to the final 10 foot of the cliff becoming extremely challenging to scale. Our continued training and the training undertaken last month with rescue helicopter allowed for this call out to be brought to a safe ending.' Anstruther Lifeboat Press Officer Martin Macnamara commented, 'With such an excellent coastal walking facility like the chain walk on our doorstep, it is important for the public to take into consideration the three key safety precautions before and during any use of the walk. Plan accordingly your walk with the tides, Inform others of your intentions to use the chain walk and the times to expect your return and finally, if you do encounter any difficulties, remain at the foot of the cliff back from the waters edge and call the coastguard to request further assist.

Anstruther Lifeboat was paged yesterday at 12.30pm to launch both boats to assist a small dingy with two persons on board fishing but drifting towards Shell Bay. Our Inshore lifeboat arrived on scene first and located the small dingy between Lower Largo and Shell Bay followed shortly by our all-weather lifeboat. The ALB picked up the two casualties and there dingy and made its way to way largo harbour but due to draft constraints, the two fishermen were transferred back onto the ILB for passage into the harbour to the waiting coastguard shore team. Our ILB then towed their dingy (picture below) into harbour and stood down to return to Anstruther.
