Since 2003, the artists-in-labs program has been facilitating artistic research by way of long-term residencies for artists in scientific laboratories. The ail's long-term interdisciplinary and cross-border collaborations provide artists with an opportunity to critically engage with the sciences and their experimental and aesthetic dimensions. This includes explorations of the site of the laboratory, as well as a range of scientific topics, methods and technologies.

Our interests lie in the interaction and expansion of types of contemporary knowledge and artistic production, and the creative potential resulting from exploring the parallels and differences of scientific and artistic practices. We perceive our work as being culturally engaged and of a curatorial and mediatory nature.

Publications along with accompanying scientific research record the processes and results of these cross-border collaborations and offer reflections on them. In addition, in recent years the programme has expanded to include a student-engaged dimension, seeing undergraduate arts and science students coming together to brainstorm some of the key issues of our times. The results include a range of science and arts projects, with outputs feeding into both scientific research and artistic practice.

All the collaborations the programme produces are presented at various national and international exhibitions, symposia and workshops, making it possible to share findings and idea

Visit labtimes.org for science journalist Hedwig Ens’ extensive review of our most recent book ARTISTS-IN-LABS: RECOMPOSING ART AND SCIENCE! “It seems as if an experimental collaboration between artists and scientists is only possible when both agree to immerse themselves in the unknown. It is in this space of transformation – from not knowing to knowing – that a hybrid form of art and science can form. Curiosity leads the way.“ http://labtimes.org/editorial/e_812.lasso

artists-in-labs flashback 2016

artists-in-labs flashback: 2016 As we are planning our 2017 projects we take a final glance on a successful 2016! From 17 May to 21 May we visited Hong Kong with «R<CONNECTING SENSES» – an exhibition and artists laboratory at Connecting Space Hong Kong, in cooperation with ISEA 2016. Oscillating between kinetic mechanics, material collages and poetic acoustics, the selected group of artists for this show shares an interest in experimental concepts and transdisciplinary encounters. Thus, the exhibition was turned into a laboratory enriched by discussions and performances. With Brass Art, Pe Lang, Takuma Takahashi + Shugo Hirao, Ip Yuk-Yiu, Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri and Nicole Ottiger. We presented our new book «ARTISTS-IN-LABS: RE-COMPOSING ART AND SCIENCE» on the occasion of the ZHdK-Day on 24th of September. The book features eight comprehensive reports on art-science collaborations and essays, addressing the potential of new knowledge through ground-breaking transdisciplinary encounters. On the occasion of the book launch former artist-in-lab Christina Della Giustina and Florian Bachmann and Marcus Pericin of the Colour-Light-Center of the ZHdK presented a collaborative, site-specific light and sound installation. It created an immersive space, transforming the exchange of water between ground, tree and atmosphere, recorded in abstract scientific data, into a sensory experience. «BAD SEED RENAISSANCE MOSCOW \ ZURICH» with artist Anastasia Potemkina (Urban Fauna Lab Collective, RUS), Phytopathologist Simone Prospero and Botanist Daniel Hepenstrick (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL) at the Pavilleon in Zurich was the closing act of Potemkina’s artists-in-labs residency in Switzerland. In 2015, for three months she investigated the networks of fungi and pathogens and how invasive organisms displace and replace native species. The artist and the scientists talked about their collaboration – about ecosystems and (bio-)diversity and about invasive organisms during a live cooking session. They combined, compared and blended weeds and recipes from Moscow and Zurich. «BUT EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT…ARTISTS-IN-LABS INSIGHTS» was our contribution to ZHdK’s «Showroom Z+ N° 6» – an exhibition with supporting programme on 3 & 4 November. For the exhibition we produced a 3-channel video installation, based on our archive of documentary films shot at the end of each art-science residency. The statements made by the artists and scientists in the videos were selected, rearranged and set in a new compilation, thereby emphasizing the collaborative aspect of the residencies. We joined the supporting programme with the former artist-in-lab and writer Jérémie Gindre who read from his novel «One Helluva Hole». Afterwards he talked with the neuroscientist Sascha Frühholz (professor for Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, University Zurich) about brain trauma, emotions and science. From mid September to mid December the artists Sandra Kühne and Marie Griesmar worked with scientists at the KAUST Campus in Saudi Arabia during the ARTISTS-IN-LABS KAUST RESIDENCIES 2016. Marie’s project investigated the aesthetics of underwater ecological constructions in the Red Sea. She was part of the research group of the «Reef Genomics Lab» at the Red Sea Research Center. Sandra focused on the Red Sea coral reefs where she looked for ways to show themes of interaction, balance and symbiosis through her art. She was part of the «Integrated Ocean Processes Research Group» at the Red Sea Research Center. Interaction designer/artist Nadezda Suvorova joined in mid November for a one-month research residency at KAUST’s «Innovation and Economic Development».

ZHdK: Showroom

«BUT EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT... ARTISTS-IN-LABS INSIGHTS» BEITRÄGE DES ARTISTS-IN-LABS PROGRAM AN DEN SHOWROOM Z+ N° 6: KOLLABORATIONEN VIDEO INSTALLATION – 3./4. November 2016, Aktionsraum, Toni Areal LESUNG UND GESPRÄCH (IN ENGLISCH) – 4.

ARTISTS-IN-LABS FLASHBACK When Art interprets Data: The Light and Sound Installation «you are variations – version 08 (prototype 02)» At this year’s open house at the Toni Campus, on the occasion of the book release «artists-in-labs: Recomposing Art and Science», the artist Christina Della Giustina, together with Florian Bachmann and Marcus Pericin of the Colour-Light-Center of the Zurich University of the Arts, presented their collaborative, site-specific light and sound installation «you are variations – version 08 (prototype 02)». In «you are variations – version 08 (prototype 02)» an immersive space of light and sound emerges out of complete darkness, transforming the exchange of water between ground, tree and atmosphere, recorded in abstract scientific data, into a sensory experience. The installation encompasses a projector, 20 centrally and vertically arranged threads and 8 active loudspeakers mounted on the ceiling. Animated points and lines, projected onto the threads, make visible the dynamic water cycle of two trees, whose data is recorded over a 24 hour period and compressed to 12 minutes for the installation. A sound composition based on the same data surrounds the visitor. «you are variations, version 08 (prototype 02)» is part of Christina Della Giustina’s «you are variations» series, which she began during her artists-in-labs residency at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL in 2011 and has continued to develop through her research. In this, now, more than five years of continuous collaboration with scientists from WSL, Christina Della Giustina explores and interprets long-term data on water circulation in trees gathered by the WSL - acoustically, musically and visually. This process is accompanied by concerts, readings, performances and exhibitions that keep the public informed of the status of the project. For this recent rendering, a collaborative exchange was initiated with the Colour-Light-Center. In exchange with Christina Della Giustina, Florian Bachmann and Marcus Pericin developed a new, data driven visual interpretation. We would like to thank Christina Della Giustina, Florian Bachmann and Marcus Pericin, as well as the programmer and sound designer René Thie for his assistance with programming and Michel Weber from ZHdK for additional technical support. Warmest thanks are also extended to Andreas Rigling from WSL, whose many years of engagement have made a rich contribution to the dialogue between art and science, as well as to Arthur Gessler – also from WSL – for the data set. Finally, we would like to thank Stefan Kreysler, whose enthusiasm and practical support in organizing this project for the open house was invaluable to its realization. © photo: ZHdK www.zhdk.ch/colourlight-center www.dg-c.org
