Was das Entwickeln von Computersystemen und Softwarewerkzeugen anbetrifft, blickt die ETH Zürich auf eine langwährende und erfolgreiche Geschichte zurück. Aus dieser Tradition heraus wurde das Departement Informatik (D-INFK) im Jahre 1981 gegründet. Seitdem wuchs es stetig und hat sich schnell zu einer renommierten Institution entwickelt, an der jetzt mehr als 30 Professoren aus über zehn Nationen tätig sind. Über 200 Doktoranden und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter sowie mehr als 50 Promovierte und leitende Wissenschaftler tragen ihren Teil dazu bei, das hohe Niveau in Lehre und Forschung aufrecht zu erhalten, für das das Departement weltweit bekannt ist. Von dieser Qualität profitieren mehr als 800 Studierende (rund 500 im Bachelor- und 300 im Masterstudiengang), von denen in der Vergangenheit viele eine erfolgreiche Karriere in der Industrie oder im akademischen Bereich machten.
In der Lehre und Forschung deckt das Departement Informatik ein breites Spektrum an Themenfeldern ab, zu denen vor allem folgende Bereiche gehören:
* Softwareentwicklung und Programmiersprachen
* Computational Intelligence
* Computer- und Informationssysteme
* Computernetze und verteile Systeme
* Algorithmen und Theorie
* Informationssicherheit
* Computergraphik und Bilderkennung
* Wissenschaftliches Rechnen und rechnergestützte Wissenschaften.
Das Departement ist traditionell eng mit den beiden Disziplinen Elektrotechnik und Mathematik verbunden, arbeitet jedoch zunehmend auch mit anderen Fachbereichen, wie z.B. der Physik, dem Maschinenbau und der Biologie, zusammen. Die eigentliche Bedeutung der Informatik für die Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaft zeigt sich vor allem anhand solcher bereichsübergreifenden Kooperationen.
Darüber hinaus pflegt das Departement eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit einer Reihe von Unternehmen aus der Wirtschaft und Industrie. Dies fördert ein sich gegenseitig befruchtendes Klima von akademischer Stringenz und praktischer Relevanz. So steht das Departement beispielsweise in regem Forschungsaustausch mit globalen High-Tech-Firmen wie IBM, Microsoft, Google, SAP oder Disney.

ETH has a long running and successful history of designing computer systems and developing software tools. Out of this, the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK) was formed in 1981. Since then, the department has quickly grown and developed into the renowned institution it is today. Currently, more than 30 professors from over 10 countries are active at this institution. More than 200 PhD students and research assistants, and over 50 postdocs and senior scientists contribute to maintain the high standards in research and teaching for which the department is known worldwide. More than 800 students (about 500 in the Bachelor's program and 300 in the Master's program) benefit from this directly and many have gone on to innovative careers in research, education and industry.
