We are pleased to announce that OS ∆ OOS has been invited by Design Days Dubai to give a workshop 'design process as performance art'. In this workshop they will reveal the making of their light sculpture series called Primary Fluorescents. The Primary Fluorescent light sculptures were revealed in the context of OS ∆ OOS's first solo show SYN-THE-SIS at the gallery in May 2016. The sculptures combine minimal fluorescent tubing with what looks like concrete (but is actually aluminum), in a striking juxtaposition of fragility and hardness, lightness and heaviness, and the breakable and unbreakable. Tulip Pyramid - Copy and Identity by Jing He, 2016 In this work Jing He explores the question of ‘creativity in copying’ and the question of ‘identity’. As an example, she chose the tulip pyramid, a 17th century Dutch invention, which form, motifs and material imitate Chinese porcelain and pagoda. In this project she continued the process of replicating and transforming which is the history of Tulip Pyramid. She invited five Chinese designers to each contribute two layers of a new tulip pyramid, and created a second one herself by combining well-known examples of Dutch design with her own work. Jing He investigates whether there is such a thing as a Chinese design identity and concluded that copying is central to it. She found that the identity of Chinese design is rooted in a long history of copying and transformation, or cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world. There is no 'pure' or 'specific' Chinese identity in design. Rather, the identity of Chinese design developed through this process of copying and being copied. #jinghe #tulippyramid #copyandidentity @design_academy_eindhoven

The black mirror from Nel Verbeke's Melancholy series. Currently at view in the gallery. Image 1-2: Details of Embrace Melancholy – The black mirror, 2016, wood, ashed ash wood, wax, copper, 183 x 56 x 27 cm, 8 + 1 PT + 1 AP Image 3-4: Editorial shots of the 'activation' of 'The black mirror' About: The black mirror seems to absorb rather than to reflect. Only when approached closely, a dark silhouette manifests itself on its surface. This is not the echo of our existence we’re used to. Whereas a mirror reflects the things in front of it immediately and directly, the black mirror seems to deliberately delay this directness and to bypass the surficial accuracy. As the black mirror moves away from the conventional effect of a mirror, it allows us to contemplate on what is often obscured by our image. It replaces the usual shallow reflection by an image of the self that includes the emotions that shaped it. The act of watching becomes an act of thinking and feeling, intensified and decelerated. The mirror’s reflecting ability is achieved by slowly waxing its surface with ashes of the parts that were removed. This strange duality, where remnants enact the vision on what continues to exist, is an abstraction of our own persistence in relation to what we had to leave behind. New work from Nel Verbeke's Melancholy series. Currently at view in the gallery. Image 1-2: Details of Embrace Melancholy – The sound of time – variations, 2017, copper, porcelain, ashed ash wood, holder: 43 x 43 x 21 cm | wall installation: variable, 3 + 2 AP Image 3-4: Editorial shots of the 'activation' of 'The sound of time' About: The sound of time assembles five hourglasses from three different materials in a copper structure and several copper wall holders. Their resemblance lies within their form: two conoidal components joined at their narrowest points. Their opaque manifestation makes them enigmatic, almost mysterious. It is within the act that they reveal their secret. As they are turned over, inner material travels from top to bottom, generating a sound: the sound of time. When considered as instruments, the objects deconstruct time and its usual metre, allowing us moments of contemplation and introspection, detached from utility or pragmatism. This is time absorbed in itself - the time of time - pronounced only by its own sound. Photography by Alexander Popelier #nelverbeke #embracemelancholy #thesoundoftime #emotionalsculpture

Nel Verbeke – Embrace Melancholy
9.2. – 25.3.2017 | Zurich Gallery Roehrs & Boetsch is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition of Ghent-based artist Nel Verbeke (b. 1989, Belgium). Embrace Melancholy’, a contemporary pursuit by Nel Verbeke to re-introduce and re-value acts of melancholy within the domestic setting. Her hybrid approach between visual art and conceptual design results in a poetic sculptural language that questions our way of seeing, acting and living.
