World Health Organization (WHO)
As shown by this video from the #WHO, the world’s populations are ageing fast. Between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%. By 2020, the number of people aged 60 years and older will outnumber children younger than 5 years. The result: an immense rise in non-communicable diseases, including osteoporosis (and related fractures). Time for action! #CaptureTheFracture

The impact of the new National Bone Health Alliance (NBHA) diagnostic criteria on the prevalence of osteoporosis in the USA
This US study in #Osteoporosis Int. finds that 16% of men and 29.9% of women 50+ have osteoporosis based on the National Bone Health Alliance diagnostic criteria. It concludes that, although the expanded definition increases the prevalence compared to BMD alone-based definitions, it may better identify those at elevated fracture risk in order to reduce the burden of fractures in older adults.
Vitamin D status correction in Saudi Arabia: an experts’ consensus under the auspices of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO)
Vitamin D deficiency is common in the Middle East and in Saudi Arabia, in particular. In this new paper a panel comprising the Prince Mutaib Chair for Biomarkers of #Osteoporosis (PMCO) at King Saud University (KSU), together with local experts and in cooperation with ESCEO, has formulated unified recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of vitamin D deficiency in the region.The panel also calls for well-designed clinical trials to address this important issue in the region.
The Future Prevalence of Sarcopenia in Europe: A Claim for Public Health Action
Sarcopenia is associated with serious health outcomes which are linked to direct healthcare costs. This new paper projects the potential future prevalence of sarcopenia in Europe for the next 30 years. It uses age and gender-specific European population projections, and the various diagnostic cutoff points proposed by the European Working Group on #Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) for lean mass, muscle strength and gait speed.
