"While I am passionate about helping others as much as possible, I personally do not give to GiveWell’s recommend charities any more, because I think better options are being uncovered, for example by GiveWell’s sister project, the Open Philanthropy Project. Does that mean I don’t agree with ‘effective altruism’? No. A lot of vegetarians like kale, but just because you don’t like kale doesn’t mean you eat meat. Similarly, I can think some scientific paper reached the wrong conclusion, without disagreeing with the goal of expanding our understanding of the natural world, let alone the scientific method."

"Beyond making big lifestyle decisions such as choosing to live in a dense urban area with public transportation, cutting red meat out of your diet, and having fewer children (or none at all), there are diminishing returns to the energy you put into avoiding plastic or making sure your old AAs end up in the appropriate receptacle. Globally, we’re projected to spend $9.32 billion in 2017 on green cleaning products. If we had directed even a third of that pot of money (the typical markup on green cleaning products) toward lobbying our governments to ban the toxic chemicals we’re so afraid of, we might have made a lot more progress by now."

"We welcome applicants from individuals of any background and hope that applicants will include senior professionals and academics as well as recent graduates. Our hope is to fund a diverse array of projects, both in terms of causes and approaches. In terms of length and size, we are both looking to give large grants to longer projects (up to £100,000, e.g., over more than a year), and smaller grants to shorter projects, or parts of projects (e.g., £10,000 (~$13,000) over a three-month period). The smaller grants could go to applicants who wish to transition into a more impactful career or who want to get started on a larger project. Grants of any size may be renewed. If you have a project that would require significantly more than £100,000, we still encourage you to apply as we may be able to find you funding from other sources." https://www.effectivealtruism.org/grants/

Is philanthropy getting smarter? Yes, it is! But there is still a lot of room for fairly easy improvements.
