History of ISZL
The International School of Zug was established in 1961 with just fourteen students, and began as a small tutoring group for American children, located in downtown Zug. Over the course of 50 years, the school has been renamed, expanded and relocated many times. However, it never wavered in its enthusiastic commitment to offer the highest educational standards to the expatriate children in the local community. Throughout its history, the school’s dedicated owners, directors and teachers shared a common vision to develop a strong scholastic programme by creating a fun environment in which to learn, along with exciting athletics programmes, extra-curricular activities and cultural excursions. While it started out to serve a small group of American children, the school ultimately ended up providing education for students from around the world.

The Riverside School was founded in 1990 as a university preparatory high school, and in 2001, it became the first school in Switzerland to be authorised to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB). It has been offering the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) programme since its inception. Outstanding results have led to an exceptional track record of university placements worldwide.

The International School of Luzern (ISOL) was founded in 2006 with just 12 students as a sister school to the long established International School of Zug. Its aim was to provide an international English-speaking education for the large and thriving expatriate community of inner Switzerland.

The International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) was founded in 2008 following the merger of the International School of Zug, International School of Luzern and The Riverside School. In the same year ISZL purchased their Outdoor Education Centre in Wengen. The successful merger of the International Schools of Zug and Luzern and the Riverside School in 2008 resulted in an innovative vision, which takes into account the school’s past, focuses on its present and prepares for its future. It is because of a shared vision and philosophy among its divisions that the school succeeds. Approaches and methods vary throughout the school, but each of the three campuses benefits from the others’ aspirations, with significant new-found opportunities made available since the merger took place.

An overview of the last 50-plus years of ISZL’s history reveals that it has continuously been committed to providing an exceptional academic curriculum coupled with an exciting range of activities and outdoor adventures. Despite its many incarnations, from a small tutor group to a school across several campuses offering education for all ages, it has consistently offered the highest scholastic opportunities for expatriates in central Switzerland. Over the past five decades of progress and expansion, the passion and dedication of many individuals have culminated in a highly successful, not-for-profit educational organisation meeting the needs of more than 1,300 pupils from over 50 nations.

This year's Tour de Suisse bicycle race will once again be passing through Canton Zug, and we recently had a visit from Rollensprint, an event organised by the Amt für Sport Zug to reach and inspire young people. All Grade 5 students competed in a short bike race on a stationary bike. The Rollensprint bikes are visiting all schools in the Canton, and the fastest students in each age category will be invited to compete in the finals on stage at the start of the Tour de Suisse in June.

Our youngest skiers from Primary School joined the Middle School team for the biggest ski competition of the year, with over 400 racers from 16 International Schools across Switzerland meeting for the SGIS races in Gstaad. It is the toughest competition of the season, where we faced racers from the mountain and boarding schools who train every day as part of their school programme. It was a great experience for our skiers who showed a lot of improvement, and both teams finished in 4th place. Well done to all our racers for their great team efforts!

Grade 7 students have been learning about acids and bases, and they recently visited the Coca Cola bottling plant and its laboratories in Zürich. The trip was a great opportunity for the students to connect their knowledge with real life experiences, and we are grateful to Coca Cola for the chance to see science in action.

This week we have a visiting artist, Ptolemy Elrington, inspiring our students. Ptolemy is behind Hubcap Creatures, and renowned for his animal sculptures made entirely from recycled materials. The main focus of his visit has been working with the children to create a large eagle, our school mascot, which will hang in the Middle School gallery. Ptolemy's visit has been made possible by the Fund For Excellence. Thank you to our generous donors for enabling this outstanding experience for the students.

On January 19 and 20, ISZL students, along with members of the Humanities Department, had the pleasure of travelling to the Open Forum. This yearly event is held in conjunction with the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Grade 11 and 12 students were exemplary ambassadors for the school as they participated during sessions and interacted with many of the attendees of the WEF. All students were inspired by the panelists they had the opportunity to see, and hope to bring new ideas and perspectives back to the classrooms of ISZL.
