UN Body Creates Post on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity

RFSL in New York Times: "In a narrow 23-18 vote with six abstentions, the Human Rights Council called for the creation of a three-year position for an independent expert to look into wrongdoing against gays, lesbians and transgender people. The expert is expected to be appointed at the next meeting of the 47-member, Geneva-based body in September. "This is truly momentous," said Micah Grzywnowicz of the Swedish Federation for LGBTQ Rights in a statement. "This is our opportunity to bring international attention to specific violations and challenges faced by transgender and gender non-conforming persons in all regions."

Expressen skriver ett reportage när de skildrar situationen för hbtq-personer i utsatta områden där islamistisk och kristen extremism och traditionella maskulinitetsideal bidrar till att hbtq-personer utsätts för trakasserier, hot och våld. Vi tycker det är bra att Expressen belyser utsatthet som finns och visar på att hbtq-personer inte kan leva tryggt i Sverige. Det är dock inte unikt för några särskilda områden. Utsattheten ser olika ut och motiveras av olika övertygelser. Kampen för hbtq-personers rättigheter och våra möjligheter att leva som de vi är och älska de vi älskar är långt ifrån över. Det finns ingenting att vinna på att försöka dölja problem och utmaningar som finns. Det finns heller ingenting att vinna på att ställa grupper mot varandra eller att generalisera hela grupper. För RFSL är det viktigt att mänskliga rättigheter gäller alla, oavsett sammanhang. Vi måste kunna ta oss an de problem och utmaningar som finns utan att föda de mörka krafter som vill använda hbtq- personers utsatthet som en språngbräda för sin egen agenda, oavsett om den är islamofobisk, främlingsfientlig eller rasistisk. Det är viktigt, ibland en fråga om liv och död, att människor som är förföljda i sitt hemland på grund av sexuell läggning, könsidentitet eller könsuttryck har möjlighet att få uppehållstillstånd i Sverige. Tyvärr går utvecklingen åt fel håll. Sverige och Europa stänger sina gränser. Det blir allt svårare att ta sig hit för människor som utsätts för trakasserier, hot och våld på grund av vem de älskar eller vem de är. De som väl lyckas ta sig till Sverige riskerar att utsättas för förföljelser på de boenden de placeras av Migrationsverket. Färre personer kommer erbjudas skydd med de nya regler som införs i sommar och de som erbjuds skydd erbjuds ett liv i osäkerhet där rätten att stanna i Sverige ska omprövas varje eller vartannat år. Historiskt framsteg i FN för hbtq-frågor

I en avgörande omröstning har FN:s råd för mänskliga rättigheter (UNHRC) röstat för en resolution om skydd mot våld och diskriminering på grund av sexuell läggning och könsidentitet. Resolutionen kommer leda till att FN inrättar en oberoende expert inom området. RFSL participated in and followed the 14th Istanbul Pride week in place besides organising a simultaneous solidarity manifestation on Sunday June, 26 in Stockholm! The program included a wide range of panels and discussions from sex workers situation to transitioning in Turkey, obligatory military service for LGBTQI people, public HIV testing to picnic in a park and dance workshops. Here are some of the highlights of the week in Istanbul! Cihan Arikan, member of the RFSL's national board of trustees has participated in two panel discussions as a guest speaker: "LGBTI+ Refugees: Process, Advent, Solidarity" "Being LGBTI+ in Diaspora, and Spaces for Organizing" A book that is first of its kind which compiles narratives of LGBTQI asylum seekers in Kurdish, Turkish and Arabic languages in one was launched; "Genetically Modified Tomato Awards Ceremony" for this years homo/bi/transphobes was held with entertaining performances and; much deserved winners in different categories won tomatoes with hormones as awards! "Tournament for the Goal Givers" with queer football teams such as Athletic Dildoa, Sportive Lezbon, Lessionaries and Queer Park Rangers was held as a fantastic example of a football tournament free from, homo/bi/transphobia, sexism, and racism and to experience the fun of scoring and getting scored. The Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul hosted a reception in support of LGBTQI community and activists together with representatives from international delegation such as several Swedish politicians and the German Member of the European Parliament Terry Reintke who got arrested because of attempting to read the Pride press statement the following day. Istanbul Pride has been banned by the authorities and attacked by the police force with extreme violence for the second year in a row after 12 years of rather peaceful marching. There were around 80.000 people in 2015 who attended the parade before the police attacks and much more was expected to attend this year had the authorities not ban it beforehand. This year, Pride committee has reacted to the ban with a call to "disperse" all over the city, and activists read out the press statement in various places and recorded videos of it, placed rainbow flags on buildings and stood together in the face of attacks being chased on the back streets Istiklal Avenue with rubber bullets and tear gas. There were in total 29 activists who were arrested on Sunday, June 26th. However, LGBTQI people were visible as everyday and the reaction from the state with massive police presence showed the situation for freedom and human rights in current day Turkey clearly. “We are dispersing, we are stronger, bigger, and louder. They are right to be afraid of us because we are uniting, growing, and marching.” was stated in the press release which was banned from reading. Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Resolution at UN - RFSL

The UN Human Rights Council, the primary UN body dealing with human rights is a body composed of 47 member states from all regions of the world. It is a special session of the Council for the rights of LGBTQ persons as the Council will vote on a new sexual orientation and gender identity resolution. RFSL's International Advocacy Advisor, Micah Grzywnowicz, on gender identity deliver a statement focused specifically on issues faced by trans persons and in particular related with legal gender recognition.
