What are benefits of learning the Russian language? The Russian language itself can be simplified to a remarkable degree and learned systematically. Study it because you want to learn from the world's greatest thinkers. Russians translate more languages into their own than any other country. If you want to get up to speed in a particular scholarly field, it wouldn't be a mistake to find a recent Russian review article on the subject and read it. Only there will you find Western European, Chinese, Mongolian, and American authors surveyed all in one place. Study Russian, too, if you want free access to internet media: films, books, and music. The Russian web is still a Wild West where the American web is civilized. Knowing the language, though, is a prerequisite. The most important reason to study Russian, though, is the people. Russians make the most devoted friends. Something about the people who repelled Hitler, lived under Stalin, and brought you the genius of Dostoyevsky – suffering? capacity for warmth? – has created a culture strong in intuition and human togetherness. Saint Petersburg is the second largest city of Russian Federation after Moscow. It is considered the cultural capital of Russia. The city is relatively young, it was founded at 1703 by Russian monarch Peter the Great. Saint Petersburg is famous for the beauty of its architecture. Letter "Ы" is one of the most difficult in the Russian alphabet to pronounce. It's pronounciation is very hard to explain. Imagine yourself being hit in the stomach - the sound you utter will be something like "Ы" ))) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4FuoNgbzjc

Happy Old New Year! The Old New Year is one of the Russian peculiarities. Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1918, but the Russian Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. The 1st of January in the latter falls on the 14th in the Gregorian, so it became the day to informally celebrate the second, "old" New Year.
