What are benefits of learning the Russian language? The Russian language itself can be simplified to a remarkable degree and learned systematically. Learning a language is not complete without learning the culture of the people speaking it. Happy Old New Year! The Old New Year is one of the Russian peculiarities. Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1918, but the Russian Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. The 1st of January in the latter falls on the 14th in the Gregorian, so it became the day to informally celebrate the second, "old" New Year.
