This Sunday we took part in a Beach Cleanup organized by Surfrider Foundation Peniche. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of oceans and coastlines. Their mission is to lead local actions to raise awareness to protect and preserve our coastlines into the future. This Sunday's action was a part of Surfrider's Ocean Initiatives, a program to tackle the marine litter issue through education, citizen science and lobbying. Marine litter is an issue close to our hearts, as surfers and part of a community that makes a living through seaside tourism. The ocean is our lifeblood, our inspiration, and our home. Our beaches, as the frontier of this essential resource, support ocean health and drive our local economy. Sadly, marine litter ranks as one of today’s most serious pollution problems, affecting all the world's oceans. Trash on the beach doesn't always come from the land, but often washes up from the ocean. It can come from halfway around the world. Over time, plastic trash degrades and is broken down into smaller and smaller pieces by waves and sand. As it degrades, it releases chemicals into the environment. Once those chemicals have leached into water and soil, it can take many years for them to break down. Marine animals will often mistake small pieces of plastic for food. Over time, consuming plastic becomes too much for their bodies. Studies have shown that a large number of marine animal deaths are now a direct result of marine debris. The tiny bottle caps, cigarette butts, and plastic straws you see on the beach are more than just an eyesore; they can become deadly. These Micro Plastics are a real problem at our local Baleal beaches, as in many places around the globe. Micro Plastics are too small to be picked up by beach cleaning machines. At this Sunday's Beach Cleanup, we focused on collecting Micro Plastics. It was great to come together with friends, neighbors, and newcomers for a fun and empowering morning in a place we all love and want to care for. Meeting new people, working together, and learning more about the environmental issues we face strengthens us as a community! We were so happy to meet a new friend (and neighbor), Gina, from Almagreira. She has an inspiring community project called Peniche Beach Conservation Program. Visit the Facebook page for inspiration, education, tips on the best ways to clean the beach, and beautiful artwork made from beach trash. Inevitably, a beach cleanup can make us examine our consumer lifestyles more closely. After spending a few hours picking up tiny pieces of plastic from the beach, you'll think twice about using single use plastics, and begin to look for ways to reduce the overall amount of plastic in your life. The litter all around us becomes harder to ignore, and picking up trash becomes more of a habit than a special event. Let's keep the energy flowing towards clean beaches in Baleal! Let's get involved in as many events and actions as we can, and pick up some trash every time we go to the beach!
