TRAFO is the youngest center for contemporary art in Poland.
In the old city center of Szczecin, near the port, stands a historic transformer station. Recently renovated, it was re-opened in 2013 as a contemporary art institution.
Several modern gallery spaces as well as an impressive 350 sq. meters, 15 m. high transformer hall allow the presentation of interdisciplinary, inter-medial and site-specific works by international artists.
Located in Szczecin, the Polish capital of the German-Polish border region Pomerania, the former transformer station was itself a witness of the changing of Szczecin’s national identity as the borders of northern European politics shifted. As a public cultural institution that is committed to showing contemporary art, TRAFO is a modern witness of interaction between identity and transformation at all relevant social and cultural levels.
TRAFO sees itself as an experimental space for con-temporary artists. Due to the special structure of the building and through its concentration on site-specific work, TRAFO is closely involved in the artistic design process. Exhibition and project work is further supported by TRAFO’s activity as a publishing house, through its own art-specific bookstore, and a comprehensive educational program.

mach przestrzeni galeryjnych umożliwia zróżnicowane działania wystawiennicze, a imponująca hala główna o po-
wierzchni 350m² i wysokości 20m zapewnia wyjątkową przestrzeń dla interdyscyplinarnych projektów i dzieł site-specific we współpracy z artystami o międzynarodowym statusie reprezentującymi współczesne pokolenie twórców.
Budynek dawnej transformatorowni usytuowany w Szcze-cinie, polskiej stolicy polsko-niemieckiego regionu pogranicznego Pomerania, był naocznym świadkiem trans-
formacji i nieprzerwanego procesu zmiany tożsamości.
Dziś Trafostacja, będąc publiczną instytucją kultury dedykowaną sztuce współczesnej, staje się świadkiem wzajemnego oddziaływania tożsamości i transformacji na wszystkich istotnych społecznych i kulturalnych pozio-mach.
Niezwykła przestrzeń Trafostacji Sztuki umożliwia artystom uczestnictwo w procesie tworzenia nowej, często eksperymentalnej jakości estetycznej. Realizacja dzieł site-specific umożliwia ścisłą współpracę instytucji z artystą na pozio-mie procesu tworzenia, której towarzyszą liczne cykliczne programy wystawiennicze i edukacyjne. Istotny aspekt stanowi również dokumentacja wystawiennicza i projektowa. Znajduje ona swoje odbicie w publikacjach i w należącej do instytucji księgarni.

[English below] Wczoraj w Berlinische Galerie miał miejsce wernisaż jednej z kluczowych wystaw towarzyszących Berlin Art Week, ‘Agentur Des Exponenten’ Andreasa Greinera. TRAFO było współproducentem jednej z prac prezentowanych na wystawie. Instalację ‘Studies of an Alien Skin’ Andreasa Greinera i Tylera Friedmana po raz pierwszy można było oglądać w Szczecinie. W wernisażu uczestniczył m.in. Prezydent Berlina Michael Müller. ----------- Yesterday's opening of ‘Agentur Des Exponenten’ by Andreas Greiner at Berlinische Galerie. TRAFO was co-producer of one of the works featured during the exhibition ‘Studies of an Alien Skin’ by Andreas Greiner and Tyler Friedman. The work was shown for the first time in Szczecin. The opening was attended by Mayor of Berlin Michael Müller.

It is the last week of the exhibition ‘The Forty Part Motet’ by Janet Cardiff. The installation consists of 40 separately recorded voices configured in 8 separate choirs and played back through 40 speakers placed in an oval in the space of TRAFO’s main hall. The show is on view until Sunday.
